I use pistol alt fire for aliens far away then switch to my rifle when they get close. The pistol alt-fire is really powerful (3 shots kill a skulk) even if you only hit 1 shot it'll take them down a lot and you can finish them off with the rifle.
I think the pistol will be even more powerful once performance is improved and it becomes easier to aim.
I use the Pistol most of the time at 1 Hive present in Alt. fire. It kills a Skulk in 3 shots the whole game.
For sitting Lerks i use the normal fire of the Pistol, 90% of the time the Lerks dead then. If it moves I use the Alt. Fire.
If you I see a Fade i switch to the Pistol to get 10shot as fast as possible in to the Fade, so that he has no more armor and even a LMG can kill a Fade then.

I dare any one to try to pistol whip a decent face. LMG is your best bet, then if need be, switch if the fade is still around, then shoot him. But to just pistol is dumb. =]

use the pistol at first is the best thing you can do against a fade. The pistol does heavy damage (drains the fades armor) which makes the Rifle afterwards much more effective. If you do it the opposite, and use the pistol only as a last resort, you end up doing less damage (with the same amount of bullets hit)

But right now it's a bit troublesome to use in the heat of things with my frame rate currently, which is only usually just playable.
I'll likely upgrade before the end of the year so that'll stop being so much of a problem thankfully.
