I was born in Quebec, and you know, a lot of the French are horrible to French speakers in Quebec. Some of them are extremely rude and stuck up about our 'accent', they think that our French is barbaric. And I don't agree that our French is 'bastardized' or however you put it, it's just different from the French from France. Kind of like how American English is different than the English in Britain. I mean what if some person from England went up to you and insisted that you pronounce 'water' correctly? I mean, come on. I can speak French quite fluently, but that's only because I was raised in Quebec. I knew someone that taught their kid four languages when he was a toddler. She just spoke to him in different languages throughout his whole infantcy and now he can distinguish each language. You just have to be born into it, and you can learn and speak languages easily.

    explanation of the language thing:

The american public school system is one of the few (I don't know of ANY others) that does NOT teach a second language very early on, this is why we often have such a problem with it

I have a friend from switzerland, he spoke English (very well), german, and french all of them fluently (german was his 'native' language)

this is all due to learning languages at a very early age, something americans just don't do (I wish we did, bah)

    I can speak 3 languages:
English, bad english, and REALY bad spanish

    Wow. Feel the love.

Spare me the uninformed, mis-interpreted paraphrasing. Anyone who actually believes this nonsense has forgotten to take off their blinders.

I agree, it's gotten a little out of hand.

I'm not locking a topic because it might allow flaming alone - in that case, we'd have about two open threads per month.

And so far, the term 'bashing' can only be used in a very loose fashion on this thread. One misquote - although it's a rather big one - doesn't qualify as anything.
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
lol, I would exactly put it as a misquote, but what ever

for the most part people have been very good, a few tools have flamed, but, b/c there is an admin posting, well things won't get out of hand (if naught else the bad posts will get nuked)

me, /me goes back to laughing at logans post

Nevermind I checked your profile. I wanted to ask you how strict the laws against brandishing the swastica were in Germany. A few years ago I remember reading about the seizure of some anti-fash punk records by the police for having the crossed out swastica on them.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I overread that up till now. Sorry.

The laws against Nazi insiginia are very strict, and in my opinion rightfully so. Anything with the swastica ('Hakenkreuz') or the SS runes on it will be considered illegal as long as it's not got 'educational value'. So far the theory, and as said before, I can only support this.

Then, we get into everydays use, where it starts getting ridiculous.
For example, movies are generally considered 'educational' unless proven otherwise. This means that p.e. The swasticas in documentations about WW2 don't have to be replaced. It also means that there can be swasticas in the Indiana Jones movies.
PC games, CD covers, etc. Don't get this generous treatment, which means that p.e. an Indiana Jones game will have to replace all swasticas.

The thing about the police seizing crossed out swasticas sounds a little improbable to me. Technically, it's not the same sign anymore. I'd guess some official held a grudge against the band and tried to make their life difficult for a time - he would have no chance with getting this through in the court, though.

ALright Nem, we'll try to keep it clean if it's gonna stay open.

Anyway, my school district is, next year, going to start indroducing foreign languages into elementary schoolers, so by the time to get out of 5th grade, they know some of the basics of one or more languages.

/me claps for legion's district (I wish my schools had done this)

btw, Legion are you a US resident or some where else?

hmm, I wonder what it would have been like if I had learned another language early on (I am currently horible at memorization and thus have serious issues with other languages (with the exeption of code ;D))

oh my, now that I found such an interesting thread it is dead. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
    *revivesthread*
A few months ago I asked some English speaking guy if there is a word for this nazi sign and he said no. Thanks to Nem I can finally I can add 'swastica' to my vocabulary.
Did you know that in Germany the Republican party was close to beeing prohibited? Would be cool to see that in America. Cause I see a rising interest for some people in simulating terrorist threats to introduce total supervision. And reading stories about the CIA and the FBI concerning roadblocks in investigations that could bring proof to it doesn't really make my happier. Anyone else having concerns about the integrity of information that is released to the public?
[joke] What about intorducing communism to the USA. No more threat from North Korea! [/joke]

Banning the swastika is just as bad as banning rainbows, or a sickle and hammer. Freedom of speech works both ways. Just because you and the majority of Germans disagree with fascist statism, or National Socialism doesn’t mean that a couple skin heads should not be able to have their own symbols. It opens a door that anything considered "distasteful" or "wrong" by the majority should be banned. I could argue that all statism symbols should be banned using that logic because they have given rise to people such as Hitler Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin Pol Pot Mao etc... god bye greens.
