I was thinking maybe adding an ammunition upgrade that allows marines to purchase incedianry or armor piercing rounds at the armory. Incendiary rounds for taking out smaller aliens such as skulk/lerk. And armor piercing for structures and onos. Just an idea.
As an idea, sure, it couldn't be too bad if they were balanced with cost/effectiveness ratios. However, practically speaking, it probably would diminish the roles of the flame thrower and future armor piercing weapons if you could just buy a cheap upgrade for the rifle or shotgun, and give it the properties of a flame thrower or armor piercing weapon later on. The reason flame throwers are used at all, is because they can drain the energy of aliens, however if you could instead of blowing 30 res or so on a flame thrower, you would just buy incendiary rounds for the rifle and get the same effect, making the flame thrower obsolete.
Yes you could balance this out by making incendiary rounds not burn as much as actual flame throwers, but its still intruding on the flame-thrower's role as the sole energy draining weapon role.
Once the upgrade is researched, all we'd accomplish is penalizing those without pres; everyone who can afford it will buy it, making it function like a lv. 4 weapon upgrade with upkeep.
