Making Rifle Crosshair = Pistol Crosshair?

Hi all. I really prefer the cross hair for the pistol as it is very uncluttered compared to the vanilla rifle. This is all the more important for me since I play in the lowest resolution (600 x 400 I think, lol) since it gives me a somewhat playable frame rate in combat.

Anyway, do any of you smart folks know how to make the reticule for the rifle the same as the pistol?


And on an unrelated note, is there any way (console command, mod, etc) to turn off in game hints such as "This is an extractor, it gives your teams blah blah blah. As before, on the resolution I play on, anytime a hint or server message ("visit so and so website") comes up, it goes directly into my cross-hair.

    Isn't 600x400 unplayable anyway due to most of the dialogues being too large for that resolution? Regardless, if you want to change it you'll need a program that can open and save DDS files. Then you just open the crosshairs.dds (take with a pinch of salt, since I'm writing from memory) and copy/paste the crosshairs in the relevant places on the image.

    I think the crosshairs image is saved in /ns2/hud/marine/, like I said, doing this purely from memory.

    Ok so I found my crosshairs.dds file, but being a complete modding noob I have no idea how to open dds files. I tried searching, and have since dl'ed GIMP and a nvidia program/plugin, but still no luck (I also don't have PhotoShop).

    Would anyone who actually knows what they are doing be willing to take 5 minutes and make me a copy of their crosshairs.dds file with the rifle cross hair changed to the pistol one? I'll be eternally grateful and furthermore promise not to hurt any gorges for 1 week!!!

    Might I suggest you just use one of the current Crosshair mods already out there? Here's a comparison of two of them:
    Left = Default

    The above link is down, but I went ahead and tried my hand at making this crosshair myself. Was easier than I thought! This makes it so that only the assault rifle crosshair is replaced by the default pistol crosshair.
