If you take an ad on TV, it's very expensive, and even more expensive if you want it during a program that many people watch. Plus, not many of the people who see your ad will be interested in video games.
However, a good example of an ad would be Steam. Like the other guys in here said, Steam will definitely promote the game at launch. This is good for two reasons. First, it will be cheap (free?) since major game launches means Steam has a chance to make a lot of money. Of course they will put the new game on the front page. Second, the audience will be MUCH more interested in the game than people watching TV. If they see an ad on Steam, they are probably already gamers and are used to buying games through Steam.
Ads? What are ads? Never see them on TV (pay TV ftw). And really who watches TV ads? Most are women who, I'm really sure about this, don't care about NS and PC wathever. Ever thought about the million dollar tv ads in the superbowl never get watched because all go to the toilet or gona eat/drink smth. So I hope they don't! Just wasted money.
The easiest way making ads is playing the game so your friends see you gaming NS2 all the time and they may buy it and then theyr friends see him playing NS2 all the time. Also a popup steam add is way more effective to reach the right people.
Also if NS2 gold is a sucess in gamplay and overall athmosphere like NS1 the Gamemagazines/Sites and the right reviews are worth millions off dollars costing you a simple free press copy.
Television adverts pay per the second, per the time slot, per showing. So you find one day can work out between $250,000-$2Million+ depending on time slot and network, that is just one day.

I don't think so but it's a nice thought :)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Errr, I thought it was considerably less expensive to get ad-space on local networks or locally allocated ad-time. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but... I can't see UWE flipping that kind of tab without massive corporate sponsors.
indipendent developers require word of mouth and features in dedicated formats like gamer shows and print or online magazines, Flayra's UWE no less than Notch's Mojang.
They could try to place a viral on certain clip-sites like youtube, clipfish and myvideo - but they did already! Do you remember what was going on in here when the corridor/onos trailer was released?

Hey I watch TV ads. In fact I may one of the few who prefers TV with ads than TV without ads. (I find TV ads entertaining usually. Also they give me a break to go do stuff like get food or so.)
Unlike the internet, TV ads do not have malware (which is good. Imagine if TV could install malware and while you're playing say an Xbox 360 for example, you get a popup from your TV >.>).
(The above example only illustrates why TV ads are different from ads on the internet. Internet = dangerous. TV = safe)
Anyway it is probably expensive and ineffecient to do TV ads nowadays especially for indie.
A lot of indie developers usually rely on word of mouth or so which is usually enough (just post it on <insert popular forum> then there's all the advertisement you need!).

I think Steam ad popup + Steam free weekend + UWE interviews with game websites (plus the NS2 game reviews) will probably be enough. If they really feel flush with cash, they could follow Valve's example and try <a href="http://i880.photobucket.com/albums/ac7/bowenac/DSCN1358.jpg" target="_blank">billboard</a> <a href="http://flipflapwax.com/storage/post-images/037-billboard.jpeg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1299095304475" target="_blank">ads</a>
Well of course I don't get food + stuff every TV ad (you know how many commercials there are >.>?).
Say there are about 7-8 mins worth of commercials every 30 minutes. I only need to really take a break once every 1-3 hours or so, not every commercial <insert gorge picture here>.

Having a segment/review on GT.com, IGN, GameSpot, GameSpy (and all of the other various game review/blog sites) will probably get more hits and interest than it ever would on a TV. Considering they'd struggle to afford 'prime-time' TV time segments - 5AM sleepy time advertising? That just wouldn't work. And they'd only be able to advertise in one area and probably host a single, solitary advert.
I'm in the UK, try and advertise on the TV over here. It's doubtful. The only way I know about this game is because I played NS1 religiously back in the day. Otherwise, news is quiet about this game right now.
I'd recommend that the NS guys get their feelers out to all of the big gaming sites and try and get interviews & segments done on them. Plus, if it gets front-page Steam treatment, that's all the advertising it will need initially.

I totally agree about Steam. I'd imagine Valve would like to make a tidy commission on NS2, and what better way than to give them free promotion to make that happen? Surely it will be front page at release considering its history on the HL engine.
Billboards... that would be fantastic, but billboards are pretty darn expensive. A good spot can be anywhere from $500-$2,000/month (low-mid traffic areas), and one wouldn't be enough. I have no idea how much a prime location could go for, but it would be over $2k I'd guesstimate.
Regardless, it would be fantastic to see the Frontiersman or the Kharaa plastered up and down the interstate!

On topic, I think steam ad and the appearance on most gaming blogs on release should be plenty of advertisement for NS2. If its a good polished game that gets good reviews, that will help even more.
I've never understood game ads in bus stations or on tv - surely 90% of viewers have no interest in your product? Only games that can get away with this are ones which already have a huge following, and just need to ring the bell to everyone that its being released - rather than actually trying to sell it to the consumer. GTA for example.

I'd say, buying frontpage AD on Steam should be way cheaper and more effective.
and ... havent you heard it yet? TV is dead ... they say
