    bases need to be able to build/spawn up quicker

    bases needs to die quicker with no/few real people defending it.

    The med / ammo spam lag is easy to preproduce. You just need a combat going on, select lots of marines and spam ammo / med worth of 10-20 res as fast as possible. This always stall the game for 2-5 seconds. I have always thought this is because of the physics calculation of the ammo and med. Naturally ammo and med physics have to be count in the server side and when you drop 20 of them in one pack they start flying around the room bouncing wildy from floor and walls. I guess that's just too much vectors to count for the server.

    Please note that Valve isn't updating servers! So some of you having issue can be due to that. Also out of the 15 servers that do seem to be online only 4 or 5 of them are really able to handle the game properly. Second make sure you try to join a server closer to where you are ping does take an effect on your client performance and fps.

    All in all I am very happy with 188 I have a few concerns. 1 it takes too long to repair a fully damaged power node. 2 I have had issues as marine comm where it jitters a lot as I try to get in the command chair, almOst like the slide problem is there. 3 macs / drifters sometimes take 2 or 3 commands before they actually move.

    Not sure if new, but I found a bug with Mac mine recycling.

    It creates a blinding light that looks like bonfire on top of the mine, and the console is spammed with script errors :P

    If i must say something negative. Then the skulk is too slow now, and it doesnt seem to be pivoting around its center mass when turning the mouse. It seems weird. Maybe its always been like this but its been masked by the fast speed of the skulk earlier. As of now i hate the speed. Useless.

    Again, great patch. Have a steady 50 frames during action. Good stuff.

    My experience with this patch in regards to client side performance has been pretty positive. Last patch i ran on the lowest graphics level, and got around 40-50 FPS. I noticed a 5-10 FPS improvement with this patch, then I went and cranked the graphics up to max (with atmospherics and AA on as well) and played another game and still was getting the same FPS as I was on minimum graphics.

    There are a large number of game play related bugs introduced though which make the game difficult to play compared to last patch, which I am sure the majority of which will be fixed up in 189

    For those complaining about bad performance, i think there are mainly 2 issues related.

    Many servers now play tram instead of summit. tram got playable thanks to engine improvements, but its not at the level of summit in the patch before. going from 187 summit to 188 tram will most likely not increase your framerates.
    Also, due to the valve problem about the server update tool, there are less good servers out there. When you play on a slow server or one with a high ping, you will get lower fps. max gave a good explanation about this.

    That beeing said, i don't think the goal of this patch was to increase fps, but to remove the hitching. I didnt see much fps improvement on my side, but nearly all hitching is gone. This means that the game feels much smoother even if the fps is more or less the same.

    ah, and don't forget to upgrade you gpu drivers. the driver makers where forced to make better drivers lately with games like rage, bf3 and skyrim comming out, and some of the optimizations might as well help ns2.

    This patch fixed the game for me. I am not getting the Video memory leak problem that killed my game. So far smooth sailing for the most part.

    Still seeing issues with Drifters not doing what they should. Most times you select something else then go back to them and then it will do what you need.

    Also same with Puscules, if it wont build them, select something else then go back and drop them. Just a pain to deal with.

    Mac pathing still a slight issue, they get hung up on items, not going around them. Better than it has been though.

    Love the new HUD

    For fps reporting the best thing is to plot the fps along time, to see the distribution (if it varies a lot) if there is a long term trend, etc. So much more information than average.

    I think I joined marine at 150s, not sure. I did this with fraps.

    I had some fun games last night and I really enjoy this build. Are there issues? Sure. The biggest seems to be server performance, and how it affects the clients. On a top server the games runs nicely. Not release nicely, but it's almost there. But on less powerful servers client performance, especially moving and turning is very awkward. I have the idea the client waits for server updates before rendering a frame. Shouldn't it push them out as fast as possible regardless of updates from the server?

    That was me. :( I think, having played a load more games, it was a server issue or relativity to having cycled home very fast. As it feels the same again now. Sorry.

    I would say though, that having played Alien commander last night, I had a lot of issues with Drifters. I couldn't drop the Hive at Cross Roads on Summit, maybe due to pustules on the floor near the hive (as that's the only thing that had changed in the room). I also found that if I hit the button to find a Drifter on the commander menu it would often stop working. I had to jump out and jump in again to get it working again.

    Am I right in saying that each hive has its own cue for drifters and pustules? As wouldn't it make more sense to simplify this a bit and just make it so you can build more of them at once when you have more hives, jumping from one hive to another to build drifters is a little bit of a pain and many people might not know that they can do this. I'm not sure if I'm right in saying this as I have only had a few games as Alien commander, but that seemed to be the case.

    I have to say I really enjoyed commanding for the Aliens, even with the little bugs. And over all I found it pretty easy to understand what to do. Although I didn't realise I could drop a Hive without having infestation there until someone told me. But I guess the game manual will explain things like this on release, right?

    woah, that's a horrible bug :D i knew that implementing the mines as a structure will have a draw back (recycle...). Thanks for pointing that out, I will fix it asap

    Whips are getting better. They actually go where you tell them, don't jump out the map, don't take 10 minutes to get to the location.

    Whipping grenades back at marines seems to work some of the time.

    Drifters are more reliable but not perfect. Still occasions where I have to click lots of locations before they build, or they agree to build but don't do anything.

    I don't understand how power nodes work now. They have to be built now? Placed by comm then built by marines?

    The blue line way point guide is brilliant.

    my console is spamed with error message, because "/materials/metal/ricochet" cannot be found :(
    I hope it will be fixed in next build, because sometimes it lags my game, which usually runs on 50FPS in minimum.

    I read that yes. But the skukis are alot slower now. Do a comparison to some of NS2HD's vids. Its slower by a mile now. My favourite class. Previous build had the Aliens nailed, perfect. Skulk = Speed.

    In comparison to NS1, the skulk is miles slower than a celerity skulk. So much so it hurts.

    I have noticed that its only AMD cards that took a hit. I got a really old laptop and running with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. I definitely got a huge proformance boost in 188.

The only improvements that have been made on the graphics side recently is with the addition of atmospherics and AA (which is already turned off by default) and if you really feel like they are contributing to your low framerate you can easily disable atmospherics in the console (r_atmospherics false) and you can test for yourself how much of an FPS difference they make.

    Cory, thank you very much for those above. I played all of versions from the first version. Tthis version is really wonderfull on the graphic side. Also last map is so great. All you work hard, but still we have single core CPU's and 8600GT or equvalent GPUs, and please think that we cant play this game in NS1 grahics.

    There are many games since the last 5 years , that has better graphics then this mode and beter FPS performance. May be there should be another mode or custom options for us.

    And I play many games, my experiences say that game will be great graphically butit will be playable 5 years later or more when all we have
    better gpus and cpus. Why we should remember all commands and why dont have much more opitons like r_atmospherics false, texutres, shadows, lighting etc. It has been more than a year.

    The FPS issues are not related to graphics options, try all settings and see for yourself. Spark is perfectly capable of pushing the polygons. Evident from the negligible performance differences, between all the different graphics settings. The new AA and atmospherics cause perhaps a 1FPS loss on my 3 year old rig...



    As the devs have said many times already, even in the post you quoted :|

    It's the server/net side of things (you NEED a good server currently), alongside the game code and physics side that are dragging down performance. Both of which are the focus of their attention (always has been)

    yes they have added new features to make things prettier graphically, but as cory has stated these barely effect your FPS.
    single core processors are being sold for $30 these days.. and goodluck buying a 8600 new, from anywhere.
    its time to upgrade my friend.

    ::insert info about optimizations and this being an unreleased game, and how regardless an upgrade is needed - your system is old and slow, sorry::
