GW is going to throw a ###### FIT when they see that. They sell that thing for like a thousand moneys, they can't have you making copies of it for the few pennies it ACTUALLY COSTS TO MAKE ONE.
very impressive. Do you reckon we could get some close up pictures? If it looks as good up close as in the video i might have to consider getting one of these printers.

You can, but the surface texture wouldn't be great. People have put several thick primer layers on it to give it a smooth surface, THEN painted over that. Works well.
If you're printing using ABS plastic, instead of PLA, you can dissolve some ABS in acetone and then paint the resulting goop onto your model. The acetone evaporates and leaves a smooth surface. You've gotta get the ratio right though, otherwise you'll dissolve what you're painting onto.

I don't think it'd be 'convert' as much as 'rebuild'. Game models usually work better with open edges, as there's a lot of detail you don't need. As far as I know, stl files need to be proper solids.
this guy built a solar powered 3d printer using sand and a huge fresnel lens melting that sand with sunlight to glas on a stepper motor pad. when one layer is done he covers the whole thing with a new layer of sand and melts again, and so on , the whole thing is powered by a photovoltaic cell and follows the sun automaticly.. thats quite ingenious. of course it hasnt good enough printing quality for complex stuff, but for sculptures and bowls its enough

For that reason I got the files while they were still up, simply for if/when I get a 3D printer myself (which I can definitely see myself doing at some point)

Reeeally? Can you pretty please send me the files for the sentinel? I didn't get a chance to grab them. I have a gmail address starting with tjhowse.
One of the things I find really interesting with these 3D printers, is the possibility of (somewhat) easily making your own props for board games or RPG games.
For instance, <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:14030" target="_blank">Daid's D&D Altar</a> or these <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5755" target="_blank">3D Settlers pieces</a>
Scythe, have you experimented with ways to 'smooth' the structure of the printed models? I guess filing/sanding it down would be a bad idea, as that would make a rough surface, and it's bound to not really get rid of the gaps either either. However, have you considered (or even tried) using greenstuff or some other 'filler' to get into the gaps?
I've wanted to try using plastidip to coat a print, but that wouldn't get fine detail showing up. I've tried spray painting and that works, but it's laborious. You need many coats as the surface is a bit porous.
I'm about to print the leman russ again and give it to a warhammer-crazy friend and he's going to see if he can paint it up all nice.
I'm going to design a predator tank too, and probably a rhino while I'm at it.
Comments
Correct! There are also a few small black bits in there from before I ran out of black plastic.
