Hmmm, so 20kb/s X 16 players is 320kb/s. x60 for a minute is 19.2Mb. x60 for an hour is 1.152 Gb. x12 for a 12 hour server uptime cycle is 13.824 Gb. x 30 days in a month is 414.72 Gb per month. Insane. Half that for a 6pm to 12pm cycle is 207.36 Gb.
I'd have to approach my ISP and ask about a commercial package, my limit is 120Gb per month domestic.
Maybe scale by, what, .75 for a start game / end game / ~14 players average differential, 155.52 Gb.

There were several. If there were 8(I think it was 8) alien chambers of the same kind within a certain range you were unable to drop any more. You could still spam A LOT of buildings, but you had to spread them out over a large area to do it.
In NS1.0x you could build pile 100 OCs ontop of one another if you wanted(and had a really tall ceiling; e.g. if you no-clipped out to bottom of that canyon outside of hera start).
There was also some kind of limit for marines, but it was pretty hard to hit(I believe ammo, medpacks and newly dropped weapons counted towards the limit; so you should be able to hit it by going full retard with the med and ammo spam)

Fana's list is pretty accurate. Problem is evidenced in discussion of the new fade blink, "we can't have momentum because it doesn't fit with the fade special effect".
??
I'm all for pretty, but can we get some good game-play first, then fit the pretty to that ?
I'd also add "sound" to fana's list.
At the moment sound is designed for aesthetics rather than gameplay. Aliens need more accurate and louder sound localization, with less reliance on bull###### scent of fear style effects. SOF adds nothing to gamplay. And the sound implementation in NS1 was a masterpiece. There is no reason to change it.

This is why hosting a 16 player dedicated server on a home machine/connection for any contemporary game is just a silly idea that people think of in a pinch when they don't have their ideal server around to play on.

That's fine, but many countries have awful telecommunications restrictions and things like that. The practical approach for "consumer level game servers" is still to just pay a company like AI or nuclearfallout $20 a month and not put too much thought into it.

Lol, Kiwis don't have silly ideas, or if they do, it doesn't occur to them and they make it work anyway. Then everyone wants a slice... (or they get their Ph.d minions to do it for them in case it doesnt work, a'la Rutherford : Get back in the closet Geiger! You too Marsden...)

So you are going to play ~180hours of ns2 per month ~ 2190h per year ~ 91days ~ 3months pure playtime?
