See this thread, it's on the front page:

Power supply is only 350W. I'd recommend you update that before graphics.

New graphics card for your pc?

If anything I suggest an ati 6850 if anything. Quite cheap and powerful imo.

But you will need a better power supply.

Your CPU is probably on par with mine, E6420@3.2Ghz vs Q6700 @ 2.7Ghz. With the game on the client side being CPU bound I'm guessing you're going to see similar results as me. That is if you actually get a better PSU and Graphic card as the others have suggested.

Your graphics card (9500GS) is a low end value/budget card, which will probably be around 25-30% of the perforance of my HD4850 (9800GT in Nvidia terms). Taken from similarly specced 3dMark scores

My current average FPS on a good server 25-30tickrate in build189:

Usually it's around 25-33FPS
In heavy combat it can drop down to about 15-19FPS
Endgame 15-26FPS
And has peaks up to 30-40FPS

My guess is that you could expect similar results in the current state of the beta...

Sadly again, people fail to realise that you have not asked for tutorials on learning everything about computers. And you actually want some direct advice about components.

Firstly, your cpu is weak, but might still handle ns2, because I used to play ns2 with a worse cpu than that.

People say ns2 is cpu bound, this is not true, it is EVERYTHING BOUND, if you have slow cpu, slow ram, or slow graphics card you will run into problems.

Finally, I still recommend you just upgrade your graphics card and power supply. Because even if it doesn't run ns2 smoothly, you will be able to run more optimised games on much more enjoyable settings at least. For example, you could max out skyrim, or max out deus ex 3 etc.

Ok, so here's what I recommend for you:

power supply: Seasonic M12II 620W Power Supply I recommend it because it has been tested and rated as one of the best power supplies you can get, it's very stable and cool(temperature).

graphics card: Nvidia GTX 560 Ti. It's not the best, but it's better than most(including my own ati 5850, and that's supposed to be a powerful card).

all up, this should cost you $500, give or take $150.

You will have to buy online, I don't know what country you are in, but if you are in america, check newegg, if in australia, check pccasegear, if somewhere else, check the moon.

You're telling him to buy the latest grade technology. You need to find out your clients budget, demands and expected performance first.

Due to this being beta software, it's bad advice to tell someone to immediately go for the current best thing. Especially being CPU bound to that Core2Quad, we need more information first.

All computer-programs are everything-bound, if it isn't part #1 it's part #2, if it isn't part #2 it's part #3, and if it isn't part #3 and will be part #1 again. NS2 however has a completely disproportianate CPU-load. If all your hardware-parts are on the same level, you need to upgrade your CPU for NS2, always. Additionally, if your graphics-card isn't up to spec you can always drop certain details (resolution\AA), while there is absolutely jack ###### you can do about the CPU-bottleneck. If your CPU can't handle it, you're screwed plain and simple.

He asked a questions, I answered with an answer, not opinion. Don't make this more complicated than it should be. Yes, I recommended the latest grade technology, if the original poster has a lower budget, sure, I might recommend something else, but I assumed that his budget was proportional to what is required while still being reasonable since he didn't specify.

Honestly, if I asked the same question as the original poster, and only got "what's your budget" type answers, rather than some actual advice to get started, I'd be slightly annoyed. Only slightly.

But yeah, ns2 can be considered cpu bound, but hey, if his cpu can't handle it, at least he can enjoy other games on high settings.

I just updated the guide I put on the forums about CPU/GPU recommendations for NS2.

I saw the 7970 scaling performance review and linked to that. So not only a budget, but any decent DX10/11 card for the current CPU is viable. The new best hardware on older CPU is bad advice, unless there's a CPU upgrade lined up to bring them in line. That's why budget is important to get. There's no need to feel like you're being beat down because you didn't consider someone's budget and their future plans, more information is better that's all.

If you plan to do hardcore gaming, buying a production PC such as an HP/Dell would not be a wise investment.

My suggestion is sell that machine and build your own with a higher quality Motherboard/PSU, then worry about a GFX card after that.
