I was somewhat going off of <a href="http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fastest-graphics-card-radeon-geforce,3085-7.html" target="_blank">Tom's Hardware Hierarchy</a>. . .
Right now I'm middle of the road with an 8600 GTS which runs the game, but not very well
I was looking to upgrade, but I want to make sure whatever I get is good enough
---
As long as we are on hardware is 2 gigs of ram sufficient for NS:2 or should I double it?
<i>(Ram is very cheap now)</i>
--- Update ---
More specs added in post 5

Your card isnt an midrange-card as you you maybe read out of the card Hierachy.
An 5 year old 8600gts is absolute low-end.
If the rest of your pc is 5 year old also, a new graphics-card or more ram would not help you, cause the the game need a strong cpu.
Something like an i5,i7 @ 4ghz
But without specs, noone can help you.
What other specs do you need?
I got a dual core 1.8 overclocked to 2.4, 7200 RPM SATA HD, 500W Power Supply, XP Pro, and the other stuff I mentioned

Yeah it's probably time for a new machine, but if I wanted to upgrade what's the cheapest bottleneck to go after?
I have a Core i7 1.73 (boost to 3.06), a GeForce 330M with 1GB VRAM, 4GB system RAM, and a 7200RPM HDD. My OS is 64-bit too, and I'm using the latest official NVidia drivers. And even on the lowest settings, NS2 is completely unplayable- 800x600, lowest detail level.
So basically, either I'm doing something terribly wrong (which isn't out of question), or you're SOL.

Your mobile i7 are not the same as the desktop equivalent (there is a big performance gap). Also the video card on your laptop's performance is just slightly higher than a HD 5570 desktop video card (330M only has 3dmark vantage scores up but they range from 2000-2300. HD 5570 ranges from 1900-2100 in their vantage scores).
I think you will hard time playing this game, even after optimization due to the video card in your laptop. If they kept the engine in source it would have been a different story though.
