seriously though, a lot of people don't have all that much money to spend on epic computers. I'd really like to upgrade, but just cannot justify the cost... mind you, I'm already running what I considering to be a midrange machine: core i5 2500, hd 5850, 8GB of ram(4GB for midrange, but hey, it's ram, ram is cheap).

Anyway, I already saw the article by ns2hd about how max is working on a pretty low end monster, and I know he's trying to get the game running smoothly on it, and that's great.

Keep optimising, you're almost there.

as to maD maX's statement about people's computers being able to intake air via a fan mechanism which could be referred to as sucking(or maybe he's talking about how computer's that people use are often low specced). Yes, it is because they have bad computers, and there's not much excuse to have a terrible pc, then to complain when the game doesn't run well on it... what on earth am I talking about? Well, You could probably get ns2 running well on an $800 pc on max settings at a very nice fps... including EVERYTHING... here's my proof(gimme a bit, I'll edit this post later).

edit, well, I failed... oh well. Check out my attempt, then check out a more better done effort:

my attempt(bit too expensive to fit the $800 budget): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14178839/the%20everything.png

the whirlpool attempt:
$770 ($1,120) Intel Gaming Config

CPU: Intel Core i5 2320 $195
Mobo: Asrock H61M/U3S3 B3 $75
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1333 $38
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB $109
GPU: 1GB AMD Radeon HD6870 $195
Case: Sharkoon T5 Value Black $59
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 520C $69 (BYO power cord)
ODD: DVD burner $22
Extra: Standard ATX Power Cable $2
Peripherals: [ 23" Dell U2312HM / Sidewinder X4 / Logitech MX518 / Edifier M1350 2.1 ] (+$356)

Oh yeah. A computer that can play Battlefield 3 at 80+ FPS beautifully that runs 15FPS on NS2 really needs an upgrade.

I'm actually confused by why your rig doesnt play ns2 very well konata. I have pretty much the same rig as yours but get 50-70 fps on a good server. Quite odd :(.

NS2 is one of the reasons I got my new pc. (I needed a new one, anyway. Good excuse.)

Asus P8Z68-V LX Mainboard ~ 100 bucks
Intel Core i5-2500K ~ 200 bucks
Kingston PC3-10600 DDR3-RAM Kit 8gb ~ 40 bucks
MSI Nvidia GeForce N460GTX (used) ~ 180 bucks
(Asus Xonar D1 ~ 60 bucks)

Before that I could barely play NS2 with 30 fps. 15 in late games with a lot of structures. 5-10 in battle.

Now I can play it with average 55-65 fps. 35-45 in very late games with a lot of structures and in battle. Even in battle never less than 25-30 fps. Still with 40-45 in early games without a lot of structures. And I am well under 1000 or 800 bucks. - And yes, everything is on, effects, higehst settings, etc.
(Just realized, it is worse on other maps than Summit.)

Btw. I love the sound in NS2. Even though sometimes it feels strange how it sounds like when something is happening far away, footsteps even around the corner seem too loud. But with my Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 250 Ohm (~ 150 bucks) everything sounds like sugar in my ears. (But this makes playing Dead Space almost impossible. Too scary...)

konata is right when it comes to rigs, I could play crysis2 on max settings with the enhancement patch (no dx11 though as i still have a dx10 card) yet NS2 only plays around 10-40 fps, with 40 being my max when not in compat and only see alimited amount of geometry.

Honestly though, i haven't been able to play the last 3 patches as my computer is currently busted and im busy with my exams, we will see later if anything changed.
One strange lagspike i always had though was when i was playing as alien, coming from Vent to the old Marine Start, when i used to jump over the railing there (when coming out of vent, taking the corner to MS) i always suddenly dropped down to 10fps or something for a second, always.

Sure my rig is getting a bit older but that still shouldnt pose a problem, its still a fairly highend system.

I7 920 @ 3,8
6GB DDR3 1333Mhz 77720
Zotac GTX295
Asus P6T Deluxe v2
2x 500GB in Raid0

I think one of the main reasons NS2 doesnt work to well for me is because from what i tested it doesnt use the 2nd GPU in my 295.

When i force the settings to disable 1 gpu or to use both, it doesnt matter in NS2, i get exactly the same FPS.
So this means basically im running a single GTX260 as far as the game cares.

However when comparing the dualgpu performance of the 295 to a single 480 (which a friend has) there isnt that much difference so for me its still not worth upgrading until i can get a clear gain.
And seeing how i can still run everything released in the last year on max (-dx11) i dont see it as a worthy investment to upgrade just yet.

Noteworthy, my friend has a overclocked 480 with a 6core amd and 8gb of ram, his performances are comparable (somewhat better) to my system and his FPS are just as bad in NS2.

However, like i said, i haven't played for the last 3 patches so we will see once im done with my exams and my pc is fixed again :)
I trust in UWE on this one, im sure in the end performance will be fine on even lower end systems.

(yes i know i dont cap I, dont use ' for don't, haven't and such, no i dont care right now, have exams in 2 hours and stressing the ###### out, also forumposts arent exactly top priority in correct grammar for me.)

+1 user error.

Dragon-Guard: you running 64 bit OS??
i noticed a big difference after switching, and i have your exact rig, and i average 30-60 fps. 75 being my max when staring at a blank wall. ( i recently upgraded to a 570 gtx, but see no fps difference, and believe me i looked for it)

OP: i agree. :)

By sucks i meant completely inadequate blue screen of death type stuff.... thats worth being sad about

just so you people know there are tweeks that you can do to nvidia cards to get the fps higher the avrage is the same but max fps goes about 30-40 higher with these tweeks.

funny thing is it makes no diffrence in game play even with higher fps its still playable the same so please dont complain just cause you avg 40fps its playable either way

Are these (http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=111369&mode=threaded&pid=1804657) the tweaks you're talking about? Or can you point me to the ones you mean?

Don't see this as a complaint, I love playing NS2 and the past couple of patches have been an amazing improvement. But I've been racking my brain why I can't seem to get at least as good an FPS rate as NS2HD get with his 460 (I think?) with my GTX560ti. (Also bought almost exclusively for NS2 btw :D) When fights get hectic it's not uncommon to drop below 15 or even 10 fps.

So far I've suspected it might be my cpu (only a Phenom X2 555) but maybe some tweaks could help.

with this in mind, i dont think agreeing that its user error is being a jerk. especially when help is offered to troubleshoot his issue - since i'm in a particularly relevant position to do so considering we have the exact same rig. (cant speak for mobo tho)

lol user error

When it comes to running NS2 more expensive comp =/= faster fps, since I imagine alot of the faults have to deal with conflicts and compatibility rather then lack of horsepower .
