Personally I find gathers a fun way of spending the evenings playing NS2 and meeting new players. I recommend everyone, even the newbie's to come and try out. Microphone is very useful and recommended, but not a must-have to be able to play. However we would expect everyone to join the TeamSpeak and to come listen atleast what the others are planning and guiding you to do.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> another good way to meet new friends from the NS2 community is to play NS2.
i don't see any point in playing this game competitively in it's current state, it isn't balanced for that and wont be for some months.

So far we have not been afraid of changing some of the basic variables to make the game more balanced. In the past we have changed some costs, amount of mines, armor values, we have also tried a bunch of more advanced mods such as the lerk spike mod, fade blink mod. And since it is just a gather instead of a tournament or more serious competetive play balance is not a game breaking thing. It is still fun even if aliens win 80% of the games.

Ideally there would be a gather-ish function already built into the game server browser, similar to how the multiplayer games in L4D2 work for example.
