Framerate Issues

I don't play the beta much, but every time I've tried it I've never been able to get my framerate to go above about 25-30 fps in NS2. Doesn't matter if I change the resolution down (even to 800x600) or change the "detail" setting to it's lowest (speaking of that, what the hell guys? where are all the settings? You can't just have one catch-all slider bar). My framerate remains around 25-30 regardless--something I am surprised to find some ingame players see as an acceptable framerate for a fast paced game such as NS!

My system shouldn't have too much issue running the game at midrange settings - and I'm confounded why it can't get any better performance at the lowest grade settings available.
For reference I'm running an intel core 2 quad Q6600 (~2.4ghz per core), GeForce GTX 260, plenty of free hd space, freshly defragged, latest drivers, all that jazz.

I'm a huge fan of NS. I know it's a beta, and nowhere near finished, but is there anything I can do under the hood to improve the framerate? I tried searching the forums but the search function doesn't appear to work. NS2 is a very pretty game, but I'd much more enjoy it if I could play it at a smooth 40, 50, or even 60 fps, even if I had to sacrifice some visuals for it. I'm far beyond getting anal about graphical quality.

There it is, CPU-bottleneck. Cannot be alleviated by any means other than overclocking it. Q6600's tended be very hot-headed, but you may be able to push it to 3GHz. Remember, it is the raw clock-speed that matters in NS2, the difference between a dual\quad\hexa\octo-core is negligable.

That being said, looking at benchmarks my Radeon 5850 should get ~50% higher performance, which bears out in reality. I also have an AMD Phenom II 965 @ 3.4 GHz, so that could be it too.

I don't know how far you are going to get without upgrades.

A GTX260 isn't all that bad, and can run NS2 without issue given that you're not setting things too high. You won't get anywhere with that CPU though (that isn't to say it's bad, just that NS2 has a sickening desire for cpu-cycles).

    Also,

Yeah the menu is kind of a place-holder at the moment and offers very little, I'm guessing it'll be re-done in due time (though it won't have the highest priority).

before overclocking or even buying new hardware, try out some console commands to disable certain graphical effects. don't expect any miracles but it might be just enough to get it satisfyingly playable.
there is also a tweaking-guide somewhere on the forum. also, fps should keep increasing over time as they optimise the code further and further: right now they are looking for an additional engine-programmer (or something like that) to hire. the game is still beta, just keep that in mind.
anyway, here are the console commands i always use after joining a server:
    r_atmospherics 0
    r_bloom 0
    r_shadows 0

    I'd add in
    r_instancing 0

Also, if you're still having problems, try
    r_mode unlit
*Warning, this command will make the game look terrible (it basically disables all lighting effects and puts all textures at full bright). Also, some servers don't allow this as its a bit exploity (but if you're only getting 25-30 fps, then you aren't at that much of an advantage).

Thanks for the feedback. Quite unfortunate that the game is such a CPU hog as upgrading that would be a real pain.

I tried those console commands, but I can't tell if they made much of a difference - if they did, it wasn't more than a few fps. FRAPS showed the game running about 20-30 fps still. (Though r_mode unlit didn't seem to function for me)

It's good to hear that there's still a lot of optimization to go - hopefully that gets sorted soon. I must admit NS2 is one of the few games I wouldn't mind upgrading for, but I think I will wait to see if it ends up optimized enough to play well, as my graphics card seems to be able to handle it no problem (or can be toned down). I did notice that in the ready room, the game ran quite well, up to and above 50 fps on average.
