Can I run this?

razman360razman360 Join Date: 2012-02-12 Member: 145127Members
Just as the title says ;)

I THINK I've seen the recommended specs for this game, which were low, however the game is in beta and obviously not fully optimised. So, before I think about preordering now, I was wondering if you guys, with your infinite tech-wisdom, could tell me if my PC is good enough to run this game at reasonable settings with a reasonable framerate :)

OS: Windows XP
Graphics Card: Geforce GT 520 (1GB)
Processor: Intel 2.13 dual core
Ram: 2GB

If there's any other info I've missed please let me know! Cheers in advance!

even on low resolution with low settings your gonna have a hard time with that setup.

    i got a phenom ii x6 3.9Ghz
    4gb ram
    ati 4850 512mb

playing on medium setting at 1400x900 or 1600x900 my frames still get low on full servers during late game where there is alot of crags/cyst/sentries and players etc.

Thanks I appreciate the quick reply..although it wasnt exactly the response I was hoping for ;)

Will you be able to run the game: Yes
    Will it be smooth: No

That setup is comparable to my laptop which gets somewhere between 1-25 fps, depending on the circumstances.

Just an FYI: I get 20-35FPS with dips to 15 and peaks to 50. In the ReadyRoom its 60-90FPS, depending on amount of players in there

Graphics settings: 1280x720 @ 512Mb Vram = Medium (although this doesn't really matter apparently)
OS: Win 7 (used XP Pro about 4 weeks ago)
    Graphics Card: HD4850 512Mb
    Processor: C2D E6420 2.13Ghz @ 3.2Ghz
RAM: 2Gb OCZ PC2-6400 (800Mhz) <-- In need for some more though due to Win 7, I guess...

I assume you're using a E6420 based on your clockspeeds, if you're able to OC. I'd say OC to 3.2Ghz to get at least something playable. The game is heavily CPU bound.

if you need help building a pc, go over to overclock.net, they will help you choose the best pc possible based on your budget.

and if your willing, you should consider overclocking the cpu.

I don't think the game with boot with 2gb ram, period.

On my old laptop I had 4gb, one stick died so I had 2gb, and NS2 was never able to launch : (

I have, and this cost $NZ977 (all up, inc monitor etc):

    Phenom x3 710 @ ~2.6Ghz
    4 GB DDR3
    GTX 550ti 1GB DDR5
    Win 7
    + Stuff

I run at 1920x1080 and get the same stats as Kouji_San, I guess it comes down to what your budget is, whether you can assemble the comp yourself, and how much time you spend researching the best prices available to you realisticly online.

    8 GB Ram

    Bad graphics good core..?

    ----------------------------

Sorry for german but think he can't englisch:

Laufen tuts sicher, die frage ist nur wie gut. Ich weis nicht was die internen GPUs für leistung bringen.
Wobei NS2 eher CPU intensiv ist, sprich je schneller die CPU desto besser läuft das spiel.

Wen du also noch ein bisschen spielraum für overclocking has (Temp. bezogen) hol es dir solange es noch günstig is!

Und denk daran, solange die beta läuft hast du geldzurückgarantie.

Back to englisch. I explained him that his laptop can run NS2 and he should buy it!

Sorry for the small necrobump, but since this is related, I didnt think a new thread would be necessary.
I'm seriously searching for a new rig now and one has caught my eye. I just wanted to make sure that this thing would be able to run NS2 WELL and not just tolerate it.
    The system is:
    Win 7
    i5 3ghz (quad)
    geforce 450 (ish)
4-8GB RAM(open to options atm (recommendations anybody?))

    thoughts? :)

With overclocking it could work, otherwise I think it will have trouble.

The GF 450 will most likely not run the game smoothly. It's a really old card and it's quite astonishing that it's actually still possible to buy it, even though horribly overpriced, of course. It's about as powerful as my card and I have trouble with lots of particle effects and atmospherics.

It's true that NS2 is mostly CPU-bound, but it's a quite common myth that you can run it on 4+ year old graphics cards without issues.

Also, sincere condolences to the guy above being told to buy the game with the integrated Intel HD 3000...

Get someone to build you a proper PC piece by piece. Premade ones are mostly crap.

Best bang for the buck currently are the i5 2500K (~185€) and Radeon HD 6870 (~140€; not the best card, but very cheap). You could also wait for the Ivy Bridge release on the 29th of this month or potential GF 660 or 670 releases in May to work on the prices a bit more, but don't expect much. RAM is pretty cheap, so you can always get 8GB, which may reduce stuttering or texture loading from disk, although NS2 probably won't need it if you want to save money.

Disclaimer: Your mileage concerning prices can vary depending on your location.

When it comes to desktops, you really do need to build your own. Anything less will get you an overpriced machine with specifications you don't quite understand, and that you won't be able to fix when something goes wrong.

Just tested the E6420 in the latest build at stock speeds and you will see around 25FPS with dips to 15 in heavy combat. I have that CPU overclocked at 3.2Ghz and see FPS from (18) 25 - 30 (60) (in combat - low combat)

    2.13/2.14Ghz: (12) 15 - 25 (33)
    3.2Ghz: (18) 25 - 30 (60)
    3.4Ghz ;(21) 28 - 34 (65)

    Readyroom, 2.13/2.14Ghz (76FPS), 3.2Ghz (85FPS), 3.4Ghz (92FPS)

Ok I noticed this in multiple of your posts, so I gotta ask...
Why do you keep posting the readyroom FPS?
Those values don't represent the game at all and are misleading at worst.

Because while your in-map FPS can vary wildly depending on map, map portion, entities drawn, and players tracked, your Ready Room FPS is usually pretty standard and relatively stable.

Saying "in-game FPS of 23" isn't informative; we have no idea what's being drawn or rendered. We don't know if there were 20 hydras around the corner, or if the match had been running for 7 hours. Saying "ready room FPS of 67" means what it sounds like: you join an empty server, look at your FPS, and report the value. Simple and reproducible.

Misleading if quoted out of context yes... I posted the other more important values as well, so what are you on about... Your out of context quoting is doing more harm :P

Your readyroom-FPS is stable (though not THAT stable, it can swing quite a bit depending on where you look), but the point rather was that the readyroom-FPS tells you nothing about the performance of the game. I don't think the TS was interested in the readyroom, but more the ingame-action situations. It's true that you can't bench those reliably, and I think that is the only correct answer at this point (not to mention we're seeing vast differences even between relatively equal machines).

I'm thinking he just added the RR-FPS to make the situation a bit less grim (w00t 60+ FPS and all).

Well he also provided approximate high-combat and low-combat FPS values. I'm not sure how much more information he could have been expected to put in his post :/

Tick-rate of, and latency to, the server are massive variables as well.
  • TechercizerTechercizer 7th Player Join Date: 2011-06-11 Member: 103832Members
    edited April 2012
Those are server and internet dependent. Low server tick slows down gameplay, but it doesn't lower reported client tick, and latency is a function of location.
  • playerplayer Join Date: 2010-09-12 Member: 73982Members
Lower tick-rate means fewer world-updates, means more interpolation & extrapolation on part of the client, which incurs quite a performance-penalty. As well as latency demanding additional extrapolation.
  • Kouji_SanKouji_San Sr. Hινε Uρкεερεг - EUPT Deputy The Netherlands Join Date: 2003-05-13 Member: 16271Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Blue
Well it can lower your FPS as well, because your client has to do more prediction... But I base my FPS (which is quite a wide range) from playing on servers that do not dip below 20-something in end games (18 players).

6v6 is is much smoother of course :)

All of which is an example of why in-battle FPS is approximate at best, and why RR fps is the closest to a standard we have.

What good is a standard that has no meaning?
Being in the RR is the equivalent of looking at the floor in other 3D games (a trick that doesn't work in NS2).
