Line of sight cloak detection & mines

For Observatory
The Observatory is slightly OP right now, since shade hive is useless with lots of obs deployed. I propose this change:

Non-cloaked enemies are seen through walls as it is now. Cloaked aliens must be in line-of-sight to be detected.

Additionally, mines will not detonate on cloaked enemies, but if detected by an Obs/scan, they will now detonate on cloaked alien.

These changes would require the Obs to be placed in more compromising positions, allowing them to be lerked or bile bombed.

EDIT:

Additionally, LOS would allow by-the-millisecond tracking. Through-wall detection would be similar to NS1 behavior.

    I support this behavior.

    +1

Also, next patch Obs should "ping" the area periodically, so no more by-the-millisecond alien position tracking.

Edited to incorporate a small mutation on what you've suggested.

I like it, this ping could be audible, would add a nice effect as well so aliens know they are visible. Instead of how it works currently, wondering why they are spotted or shot at when cloaked. Might need some hud FX for aliens to add to this audio cue!

Once shade cloak is reworked, that will be the time to revisit obs balance. Anything sooner will just end up causing extra work.

Why would a mine not detonate on a cloaked alien?

Just because they aren't visible doesn't mean they aren't there.

    ================================

Cloaked or not if they are moving they should be detected.

    Mines are triggered by lasers.

Defeats the purpose of the shade. Spam Obs (as we see now), and you've pretty much negated an entire alien mechanic. At least with LOS detection there is a little bit of a counter, but since it needs LOS, it would have to be placed in a vulnerable manner, prone to sniping.

I like the idea, makes obs morevulnerable when put in usefull positions, but also easyer to understand why you are decloaked as an alien when you can see it.

How does that defeat the purpose of the shade?

When your cloaked you should be waiting for the kill. I.E; ambush.

Shade allows me to run behind them and bite them in the ass. Right now, shade is useless when obs are deployed, because everyone can see my sensor blip running around behind them.

Why does cloak have to be strictly ambush anyways?

Huh? No way! If I'm not cloaked, then I have to hide and ambush. When cloaked I have the opportunity to engage unseen. Thats the whole point of cloak. I don't need to be invisible when hiding anyway.

because "cloak" is in reality a phase variance enabled by partialy dissolving in the bacteria cloud.
anyway, think of it as an extremely weak version of the fade shadowstep / blink.

reason it's still named cloak? marines are too stupid to understand it and have no sensors for it.
aliens simply become invisble to them on multiple spectra (ir, uv, normal light, etc).

In reality, such things would cause a black spot moving across a person's vision like a black hole in front of a star field. Hardly a cloak, but would work incredibly effectively vs a laser. But on that note, a sensor ping would not be able to read them very easily if it's just using the EM band!

    I don't think that's what you said :)

Define phase variance, and "partially dissolving".

phase variance is a form of technobabble.
Basicaly it means ignoring the laws of the universe.
In my post, you could say the player's point of view isn't exactly a representation of his body but his ghost, but that's just plain wrong as you still collide with the world, your fellow players and enemys in game.

In general context and in response to the black spot claim, DARPA already researches active cloaking that maps any radiation (IR, UV, visible light spectrum, radar, you name it) around the equipped body - no matter if human or vehicle. That means, you're not looking at the equipped body, but through it as the light effectively wraps around it - pretty much like a cloak. As infrared radiation is also known as heat, the technology would fry the body within the cloak if not for the fact that scientists already claim to be able to successfully reroute heat with carbone nanotubes towards a surface that's hidden anyway: the floor the body is resting on.

I hope the heat routing technology hits retail shelves soon, I'm tired of dust, dirt and dead animals inside my computer's case.

If light bends around you, it doesn't enter your eyes.

Stay tuned for build 201 Realistic Cloaking: Aliens are now blind while invisible.

    On topic:

Does being passively revealed by an observatory remove the first-person cloaking visuals? If so, I think that's all the indication you need to know what's happened; if not, it should.

Not a fan of the mines idea. Mine spam is powerful, yes, but it also costs a bomb, and there are already enough ways to clean it up.

Can't say I have a problem with Observatory behaviour at the moment, but then again I hardly ever use cloaking. Might withhold judgement for the moment.

and in any case, I do know that if you are clever, You can actually have their skin and eyes absorb light, and remmit it exactly on the opposite side in the same line (including from their eyes) which would make them invisible, but still able to see.

That's actually how it used to work in NS1 if I recall correctly.

Edit: Ah here it is from the old manual:

Observation: "We hate this. Hate it hate it hate it. It's bad enough that they hide in shadows and run on walls – when they can sit out in plain sight in a well lit room and just wait for you to walk by so they can jump on you from behind … scares the sweat outta ya. You hear stories about someone getting on an elevator alone, closing the door, hitting the button, and just as it starts to move they hear this god-awful chuckle ..."

Thesis: the outermost epidermal layer becomes a crude computer screen, using skin pores as pixels, and secreting pigment for color. When the alien stops moving, it probably "plugs in" to the local bacterial network, and "downloads" the correct background image. As this evolution becomes more efficient, the "pixel" count increases. Kharaa are naturally resistant to most forms of detection – for instance, their body temperature tends to match the room's. With the cloaking evolution, their ability to disappear is total. This upgrade works only when stationary – once the alien moves, or attacks, the link is broken, and their skin reverts.

I'd like to see the chemical reaction of bio luminescence that's mimicking a 200 watts halogen spotlight.

For the "found ya!" mark of an obs: how about a hologram thats projected onto you?
that'd actualy make sense for a marine to know with what he's dealing with, and it wouldn't hurt gameplay if the alien gets that feedback at the same time.

Well, If you include the idea that they actually take the energy from light hitting them (from said spotlight) and then reemmiting it on the other side, Minus some inefficientcy, I can certainly see that as PHYSCIALY possible. As for whether it is actually possible to have that in the real universe, well.. No idea.

    new marine tech

    Breathing masks + canned air

Limited air capacity, recharges at armory, when active gives immunity to cloaking + shade effects.
Must be manually toggled, marine takes rapid health damage if active with no air (due to suffication)

I would really like to see a visual effect to show the detection area of the observatory. A transparent ripple going through the air.
