Hi,
Im new at the forums but i bought Natural Selection 2 in the Alpha stage to support this fun game :)!
I have just started to play and as a server provider i really want to host my own servers but the problem is im running linux/unix only and i havent found any servers-files for them yet (is there any?).
I think server binarys for linux and unix are the most important thing if you want to get a big fanbase and a large community to support the game, i have done some research on the Windows server binarys and people are talking about overclocked i7s to run this server software, whats up with that? do i really need to run it on a i7 in 4.0GHz on 8cores when i can run a SCRDS (Source Dedicated Server) with 32slots on a old AMD Opteron from 2004 (singelcore)?
This dont really make any sense for me or my friends so im really asking you (the developers) to fix a good linux server base so we can start mass hosting servers for the players without lagg :)!
Do you need beta-testers or anything else for it dont hesitate to contact me asap!

As of yet though there is no stand alone linux version of the server - But i too want this!

I will never use Wine on any of my servers :)! so i will wait for a proper linux server.
Some Wine hate going on there!
Done properly, wine can actually decrease the load on the developers without sacrificing, that's what it was originally made to do. Threadspace hyperbole built their linux server on wine as it was too much work to port completely. Worked extremely well.

I dont agree.
My understanding is that the dedicated server is currently very CPU-intensive and does not multi-thread well, so the best indicator of performance is single-core IPS.
As far as Linux binaries go, yeah, it doesn't really make sense; particularly as a Linux server is so much easier to administer remotely (as is typically the case for a colo).
Can I get some examples so that I know why you completely disagree? :)

I'd love for someone to prove that wrong.

Not sure if that was aimed at me. I don't deny that it probably sucks terribly. I doubt the NS2 server software was written for WINE. My arguments is that if it were from the beginning, it'd run quite nicely on both OS's.
As said, the threadspace hyperbole developers carefully developed their server system to be as compatible with wine as possible. Of course it's not NS2, but I strongly believe if wine is part of the development stream, it can run equally well on both systems. Developing for wine as an afterthought though, is what makes the process difficult.
Also:
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Some people argue that since Wine introduces an extra layer above the system a Windows application will run slowly. While technically true, Wine is no different from any other software library in this regard;<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
*cough* *cough* .NET framework *cough*
Remember, Wine Is Not an Emulator (WINE) :).
Max has already mentioned several times that he's looking into a Linux server but he couldn't give any ETA at all. The server might be released in a few months or after v1.0, maybe it'll never be released - we don't know :)
I'd highly doubt they'd never release a linux server build, but I could see it coming after v1.0.
You could be right. I hope there will be a stable and more or less fast Linux server before v1.0 because most of dedicated servers in Europe are running on Linux distributions, Windows is not that widespread as in the states.
There were a lot of games that didn't distribute Linux binaries at release and you could clearly see ( or imagine ) how many servers were "missing"/not available due the fact that most clans are running on cheaper Linux boxes.
A great example is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare -- Infinity Ward didn't ship any binaries with v1.0, so there were only a couple of hundred servers available for months (!), I think it was after v1.1 or v1.2 when they released a Linux port ( which is always done by a single man that converted almost every COD-Server from Windows to Linux since Call of Duty 1 ) thousand of servers immediately appeared in the server list, which was great because most of the Windows server were all the time full or ran on a crappy WINE-server, which had a bad performance.
With that in mind I'm always a bit skeptic when there are no Linux binaries at all. I don't have any final numbers but I guess the ratio between Linux and Windows root-server ( for gaming/clans ) in Europe is like 90% (Linux) to 10% (Windows), which may sound weird that most American I guess :) Unfortunately that's the reality at least in Europe.
So I really really hope there will be some Linux binaries for all of us who are running on a Linux box and would love to setup a NS2 server right now! It doesn't really matter whether they'll be released before or after v1.0, all that matters is that there will be some binaries to help us to support NS2 :)
It's a win-win: We get some binaries to setup some servers on our own, NS2 and the community gets more servers to play on.
Those reasons makes it more efficient to port the (almost) finished code-base to another platform.
Today's (agile) development is all about efficiency.
