Sad to hear as, although I'm US west coast, I had some fun matches on AusPure. I believe it was also one of the few times I was able to play ns2_turtle on a public server.
QUOTE (Visor1 @ Apr 3 2012, 11:22 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

"As I've said before, I can't disclose our hardware specs.
What I can do is suggest is that some games we already host have requirements far beyond what you have seen before, NS2 included :).
It's not a problem :icon14:"
I'm a bit skeptical that they realize that a good NS2 server right now (i.e. consistent >20tickrate for ~75% of a game with 18 players) requires some serious non-standard server hardware (basically, 4.5+GHz OCd CPUs). Even a top-of-the-line Xeon will have trouble past about 14-15 players.
In another post in that thread, that administrator gave the impression that he's basing his claim on NS2's published minimum requirements. If that's so, he's in for a surprise.
If the internode and 3FL servers don't work out - it might be worthwhile talking to the devs about being the central point for an Australian NS2 server? Have a trusted party to manage payments (possibly some funding as well?) Maybe a "monthly contributer" tag such as the old constellation member scheme?
I'm sure NS2HD and a couple of dedicated community members can probably moderate it.

Is serverhousing no option in australia?
I dont believe a server payed by community work over time. -Who is the "real" admin? -What if people dont pay? The one who signed the contract, has to pay for them. This will end in trouble.
I think australia need one "idiot" like endar, tempest or me, who is willing to spend money in hardware and paying the monthly cost. With donates, this should work.
So the goal isnt: find a provider with insane hardware. The goal is: find the "idiot" and a cheap but powerfull serverhousing offer.

I looked into purchasing a server already, unfortunately I can't see any easy way of getting a 5mb upload to my house :(
This is why i've suggested that we need maybe the devs to be the owners of the server and have some encouraged donation scheme.

If this is right: "Endar's OP said if someone can host Power, Internet with 5Mb+ Upload and are in a cool room, he would look at supplying the hardware. "
I have a simple solution for you:
Endar is searching a provider near his homecountry who offers serverhousing and bring his hardware to the new home. He signed up the contract. This for example: http://www.fluccsdedicated.com.au/server-c...australia.shtml
Now comes the google-donate list. Endar give adminrights (Overmind) to the 3 ppl who want to donate the most. If one of them cancel his offer, next became admin. If noone payed anymore, endar can cancel the contract.
In the end you have: -The same powefull server -Endar hasnt to pay something, cause community do -4 admins (incl Endar)
As a fellow idiot, I wouldn't hesitate to fork out my own cash for the hardware, its the ongoing monthly payments for the rack space + IP that are the killer in Australia (unless you happen to have a "friend of a friend" at a colo facility)
Having a quick look around, for 2 RU is around $500 a month, with 500 gig of IP...

ah its a shame the Internode server wasnt up to much, on 10 players in RR it choked below 10tick rate. The Aussie community was all on Mr Alchemys home hosted 12player dedi this evening and great performance but he wont be able to keep that up with the bandwidth used. Mr.Alchemy "well played guys, good game, going to sleep now - turning off the server" Good night kiwi :) We will figure something out between us I know we will. Best option as suggested is probably finding a new home for the Aus Pure box, im willing to chip in a monthly amount as are a lot of people here it would seem.
Yes can some one give a actual figure of how much it would cost? we have a fair few potential donors lining up and it would be good to see how far it would need to go too. *cough* could we bribe internode? :p

You need to find a company that offers tower-housing.
What about this (someone has to contact them for price) http://www.vintek.net/web_tools/hosting/colocation.aspx
But the prices seem to be hefty in australia. In Germany you pay 60-70€ for housing or you can rent an 2600k@4,8ghz for around 120€ with unlimitd traffic like i do.
Im sure someone getting a good offer here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com.au/australia-18/
Need to keep it fairly positive over at internode - the guys have done a pretty big favour for us to get a fully supported free server set up. It might not be what we are used to but it shows some promise. It might come down to having some small matches for the next couple of patches. Maybe we can try to seek some feedback from the devs to see what improvements are coming over the next couple of versions? I'm sure they're aware of the server problem over here!
Internode dont listen, i told them not to worrry if its nowhere near a 4.5ghz i5/i7. They just rushed straight into it, while i admire their enthusiasm it was a waste of effort and resources.

QUOTE (Codeine @ Apr 8 2012, 11:47 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Internode dont listen, i told them not to worrry if its nowhere near a 4.5ghz i5/i7. Not a waste at all, we have one of Australias best gaming ISPs interested in supporting a game "WE" like to play. Be realistic and realize it is in no way their problem or fault. It is for the millionth time us who have to come to grips with un-optimized servers until UWE focus on reducing server specs, performance and upping the amount of player slots available. Not to mention internode are aware of this thread so whinging on here will likely have them thinking we are ungrateful and most likely retracting the offer to host.
I can understand it is hard to accept this fact when things were only just starting to get fun on Endars servers. The best we can do is explore possible options that don't break our pockets and to try not complain about the options people have been generous enough to provide us.

They were nice enough to put one up when nothing else was available. Regardless of the performance, they are giving the game more exposure to the Australian audience.

To be fair, hosting servers is what they do, and they do it for pretty much every game. Other ISP's and common server providers have put similar servers up for NS2 in the past but taken them down after realising how bad the performance issues are. I see no reason to be so sycophantic towards them, only honest about the situation.
What Codeine said is entirely reasonable and most importantly, true.
Alright sure, lets offend them get the servers retracted because certain people cannot put up with lag when there is nothing better(like it has never happened before). Behaving like an entitled brat will just have these groups avoid supporting a community who seem to be full of them. We are just the reasonable balance.

We've not insulted them, the only person being offensive to anybody here is you. I'm not angry or demanding that they now put up a new server, OR ELSE, or anything silly like that. I understand their reasoning and agree that UWE really needs to put a lot of focus into server performance. Chill.
As for there being nothing better, playing on West Coast USA servers with higher tickrates -is- both smoother and allows at least the minimum reasonable number of players for a decent game.
I was just explaining the difference in tone. You can express your concerns with better language without pointing at problems with someone just going through the process. Which we mostly weren't convinced would be enough. So what, I am grateful and I and happy with what they have provided. Perhaps more discussion on what other options are going through and how much they will cost. Rather than kicking around a dead horse.
I think, on the whole, internode starting up a (poorly-performing) server is a good thing. They can use the data gained from that time to decide what hardware to put behind the next server they put up.
