OOOhhh, it looks so cute! And it also looks very friendly! I'd like to have one as an animal at home.

whoa! fatty f-ing rocks! can't wait to see it moving in game (I'm especially looking forward to seeing it puke up the alien structures) <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
Plz plz plz... I don't care if you have to stage it pleeeeeeeeease post a picture of a lvl 1 jumping in the air with his claw about to pierce a fleeing marines neck PLZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!
The model looks GREAT, maybe next the Level 3 will be given image. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> Keep up the good work, guys.
The crew did it again. I still think Cory drew a picture of the finished models, which were then released as 'a sketch of the alien models who are not finished yet'...
Haha, kool AV, Shuvit. I just watched Princess Mononoke like 1 hour ago. <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
Anyhoo, I would love to see some more models of the alien side. We haven't been allowed to see that much from what I can find, and since I'm pro-alien in the first place, I'm obviously and understandably a little sad that we haven't been permitted to see much of them.
*crosses fingers* Please, gawd! Let me see more! *tugging on MonsE's jeans* Please, gawd! Please! <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
Verry nice work being done.Better than most reguler HL models I think.
Keep up the good work guys! <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
Shuvit with the hakudama AV! Very cool. Now that I've firmly ensconced myself in the geek camp....
The danger, of course, with giving in to us forum bums is that it sets a precedent. Now we're all really hoping you've got another model up your sleeve that you can throw at us.
Really... Really... Hoping...
I was wondering, though, what the scale for these things is. How high would pudgy stand on a Marine?
The model/texture looks great, very professional job. Although, in respect to the function the alien plays in the game, I'm just wondering what the logic was behind the anatomical design. Having to stand on 4 legs and build upright structures doesn’t seem very correct in respect to builder efficiency and conflict with gravity, to name a few.
The alien structures are fairly tall compared to the aliens themselves. This particular alien would have to stand on its hind legs to build these structures, not to mention is has hooves and large clumsy claws instead of fingers or tentacles. The design just doesn’t seem to make sense. I thought the level 2 alien in the play test last weekend worked a lot better logic wise for building, grappling, clinging, and having enough extra hands to work while stabilizing itself on a flat, bump, or inclined surface.
I’m also wondering why the aliens are supposed to be much more powerful then the marines, yet the skins show almost no sign of armored plating, just fleshy skin that can be easily penetrated.
Not to rain on anyone’s parade but if this is in fact the level 2 alien I don’t think it was designed very well at all. Perhaps someone could add a bit more.
OMFG!!!!!! how did i miss this thread?!! thats what you get for abstaining from the forums to finish a playtester form.
Pudgy!!!! i love you! Cory, Beaner, what type of beer/soda do you guys drink because i am mailing you each a case! gyah!! /me is overly-excited
i cant wait to see what great animations he will have, after seeing the level 1 in game and his fluid movements i am sure i will be blown away by pudgy
Bilko, i believe i can field your question. It would be rather unadvantageous to have a creature that has to assemble the buildings. They are complex biological structures that would take a great deal of manipulation. I think that conceptually the structures would have a prebuilt compressible shell that was spit out and then to build them pudgy would fill them with their goopy components. If the builder had evolved to assemble structures he would have to hands, as you said, but still retain his bulk so his internal organs can produce such complex structures. Evolutionarily, a builder would have evolved so most of the building would be done in the body and the act of assembly would be minimized in time to reduce the risk to the individual.
btw, im starting a pudgy fan club... its just me, and thats all i will talk to myself about ~:)
That is one fat greatdane. I'd be interested to hear some answers to the above issues though. What were some of the design thoughts that went into this?
Ok, thanks a lot wurm, that clears it up. So, big bad builder squirts out buildings instead of number 2. lol. <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
I just hope the next two don't look like a mutated bear =p
Wurmspawn pretty much nailed it. The buildings are lifeforms similar to the aliens in that they are grown, not "built". The design for the level 2 is that it forms the basic organic structure inside its fat belly, then essentially vomits it up in a big ball of alien goop (don't you just love my technical terms). The act of building comes in when, using that extra part inside its mouth, the level 2 spits the bacterial stream onto the genetically prepared glob of gunk, triggering it to begin its growth cycle. The look of the buildings was designed so that they would look like they grew upright, sorta like a tree with a tentacle trunk. Hope that clears it up for everybody.
Thanks for all the comments. And don't worry, Bilko, no mutated bears for the other 2 aliens.
So when playing a builder, will we have a special "Upchuck alien building goob" button? Once it starts growing do we have to stick around and keep upchucking or just defend it and let it do it's thing?
Wow, I'm always one of the last to see these things :/ So, what's going to attract people to the level 5 alien? From what I hear it is too big for most areas, slow, can't walk on walls or fly, costs tons of resource points... Not meaning to complain, that looks awesome <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
oh wow, pudgy sure is lookin good, only thing I can think to improve it is to have him and his pals on my computer eager to be recieving me and my teammates' high velocity slugs <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->
The fact that you're an unstoppable hulk of spikes and armor will attract people to the level 5!
I must say, superb work on the level 2 model. My favorite by far, the shine makes it look much slimier, much more disgusting and alien <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> Will it actually shine in-game, or just have a light spot on the texture? Could you use shaders to make it shiny, or would you not be able to use textures then?
I also must point out that the colors are very close to what I guessed they would be! *winks at avatar, which was made shortly after the concept sketch came out*
Bravo, I like it even better than the concept, it looks more like the size it really is, rather than the size of a car or something

The alien starts spitting the liquid bacterial stuff onto the building and you get a little progress bar to let you know when it is done. Multiple aliens can help out to make the process go faster.
One other thing. Most or all alien structures don't need to be tended to. They will grow on their own if you don't speed them up yourself (with the use key). The average time to build a structure is about 12 seconds I think.

'Bout Great Dane sized.

Exxxxcellent, Smithers.
