This is true, look to Dota 2 and LoL for current examples of this. Even player streams still maintain viability as an income source because although people could just spectate from within the game, many still attend streams for the sense of interaction with the player.
Though I'm not sure how Dota 2 and LoL deal with in game spectating for competitive games, whether or not they're locked etc. It seems like it would need to have some kind of built in delay to prevent cheating, how did it work in CS and NS1?

I just don't think it would be worth the delay of the game when twitch will satisfy the majority of the market.

Natural Selection 2 is ripe for both competitive casting and monetisation. I'm sure Charlie is just perfecting the formula before throwing NS to the sharks of mass marketing. :D

I personally get nothing out of watching ns2 casts (no offense to the casters, I appreciate the effort they put in) because my knowledge of the game far exceeds theirs and it's a constant frustration to have to follow their point of view, which is often not centered on the most important parts of the gameplay.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
QFT. Yeah the effort they put in is great but a lot of times things are going missed, and sometimes the commentary is lol worthy. eg: "would you agree these weapon upgrades are helping them kill aliens faster?" "yes"
"would you agree these armor upgrades are helping them stay alive longer?"
The chances of NS2 making it as a full blown e-sports game are pretty much nil.
Mostly because games that aren't 1v1 means it's really expensive for sponsorship etcetera and unless it's a DotA clone the viewer numbers probably won't justify it.
CS and CS:S are relatively dead competitively compared to the big games and they both have 50k+ players concurrently still.
So the chances of becoming an e-sport are relatively small unless player numbers are insane, but obviously competitive play will always exist and the devs can help support that with ladders/leagues/nice spectator features.

NS2 doesn't need to be an e-sport to succeed, it just needs a good solid community following in order to establish itself a name. The biggest concern my brother and I have with NS2 is, the skill has been stripped out of the game. Now many of you here may think otherwise, which is fine, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
But when you come from games like cs.16 and quake 3(cpma) or quake live(pql), right now NS2 is kind of stale and skill-less. I do believe mods and the community can remedy this, which is a good thing as always. Half Life wouldn't have been as successful if it wasn't for it's modding community, so the same could happen to Ns2. But as it stands right now, when I play NS2, I can tell they focused more on graphics and the mainstream crowd, rather than good solid game play.

I guess I've always viewed 'esports' as just a clever marketing ploy for competitive gaming. I agree with kingmob that NS2 would be an 'esport' if a) competitive NS2 existed and b) there was sponsership.
