Traitor / Cheater / Both?

MaximumSquidMaximumSquid Join Date: 2010-07-20 Member: 72593Members
I noticed while comming aliens last night that for multiple games in a row all my cloaked drifters would die within the first minute or two of the game

I build usually 3 more at the start so watching 5-6 of them getting instantly gunned down all over the map cannot be a coincidence

What I can't figure out though is whether someone on my team was feeding information to the Marine side or if it was someone using cheats to either see cloaked units or run a maphack that revealed everything

Either way I'm putting it out there so people can start watching the game a little more closely and maybe write down some Steam IDs

I've certain started. . .

Another option could be an error in the cloaking code so they stay visible? Where there any errors in the server/client console? If not this is indeed quite odd...

Obs in area or scan excluded I assume as it related to all your Drifters?

myb marins shot randomly to get alien drifter in the early game
or the commander is using scan on CD
or they saw them flying to their position

    and so on ...

calling cheats without any proof is kinda ;)
myb ask a mate to command aliens for the next game and use the spectator mode to proof it b4 u post something like this.

I have become suspicious of this one as well as I watch parasited marines on my rmap as I hold shift and walk through vents to sneak up on them.... Well some actually track my every movement through a vent without a scan... It does make you suspicious.

Can you link a screenshot of what they look like on your machine?
To me Drifters are virtually impossible to spot, but this does raise some questions as I know from previous experience that the way a person's machine handles transparency can differ wildly

This probably also explains why in the few games that a Khammader gets cloak it seems to be virtually worthless against some marines, but almost flawless against others to the point where you can body block them and they still don't shoot

When units go camo, they aren't completely invisible. Its more a very dark shadow.

    Example:

Calling cheater with no proof is namecalling.

You may be placing them in crossfire positions.

I thought of that and maybe 1 or 2, but not 100% of my drifters for multiple games in a row. . .

I'm probably just overlooking the most obvious solution that someone was just feeding info to a friend or group of friends from spectator

This theory also removes the burden of me needing to find proof since you cannot spectate a spectator. . .

As an added bonus the spectator could join the team they want to lose so that the other team goes +1 or +2 before they return to the RR
(which also was going on along with some other gross sportsmanship, but I don't need to mention everything I saw during those games)

The most obvious solution is actually that they just got pinged, or they were shot on their way to their destination. I think it is highly unlikely that there just so happened to be multiple "traitors" passing information to multiple friends on the other team on multiple servers at multiple different times. However, if these incidents happened within a constrained time period, on a single server, with a single, limited pool of players, then I would have to say that your sample data is woefully inadequate.

As Gadx pointed out, drifters aren't 100% invisible. Depending on the background color and lighting, your positioning of the drifter (maybe an obvious spot?) and the monitor/gamma settings, they can be clearly visible sometimes.

There's multiple things you can see from both sides as commander that you shouldn't be able to see. You can hear stuff in areas you have no vision in, see black smoke as aliens, drifters as marines, etc.

    Also...

(Old) ATI driver sometimes made all cloak structs with a little border. (11.9, i'm outdated) ALWAYS.

Something like this (I know, kid drawing, sorry):

Usually the alien-comm moves the drifter to well know locations (above the bigbox at elevator warehouse), and the little ghost effect gives you a chance to see them. In game the drifters are easier to see (a little movement). Also I play with a 1920x1200 and 90% of bright on my monitor and this helps.

maybe the very subtle cloaked drifter effect is more visible with some combination of settings. say lowest settings, or no atmospherics.

maybe someone's playing in wireframe? i wonder if that would show invis drifters

actually all he/she would need to do is toggle wireframe.. (I think, haven't tested it because I can't get LAN working)

Come to think of it, this should probably be tied to cheats console command should it not? So people aren't using this in pubs?

Just wanted to say that your title reminded me of an old NS1 bug where you could go Alien, enter the console command for hopping in the Command Chair, and it would spawn you as a Marine on the Alien team. You could run around killing off Marines and no one knew what the hell was going on.

They're fairly visible to begin with. It doesn't really show properly in a screenshot (when not in motion), but have a look at them ingame yourself.
It depends a lot on the lighting.

Also, as mentioned, it can depend on the graphics card and drivers. I remember a specific game where cloaked people would just end up colored in a single color for me, rather than be translucent with a bit of lighting reflecting off them.

Used to be like that in NS1 as well with Radeon cards where you could change a setting and it would remove all shadows from the game (cloak counted as a shadow).

Like blink said... you can see drifters.

I can spot them really easily... along with cloaked players. Gotta put drifters in corners or behind stuff if you want them to live.

hide the drifters... a lot of times i have seen people run into them and keep moving around them (maybe thinking there is an object blocking them) instead of killing.
and you goota remember every marine has their own scanner... lmg, pistol, hatchet, and running into them.
I personally scan with my gun all of the time, you know where I'd put the drifter if i was comm.
It is always possible like said before error, cheat, wireframe, or just knows how to find them.
oh cheaters... I feel pity for them.. obviously they suck at the game they gotta cheat most people would just learn how to play rather than cheat, but here we are :/
    anyhoo,
that's whatever it is you were talking about for you..
    :)
