<div class="IPBDescription">can it be turned off?</div> Hello, I'm not sure if this really belongs in tech support, as it's not a bug as such, so feel free to delete or move it if you like..
Basically, I was wondering if I can disable the dynamic lighting, especially on the phase gates.? It makes a huge dent in my fps, more so than a screen full of turrets and players. It's because of my extremely rubbish intel gfx card I know, but if there was some way to ditch it , it would be a great help. The PC I'm using doesn't belong to me, so I can't really go throwing new parts in. ( It would invalidate their warranty..)
If it's now hardcoded into the HL engine, is there some way I could alter or replace the phase gate models perhaps.?
Thanks in advance for any help.

...used to be the command for that, I'm not sure if it still works.
Nice when people at least suggest possible help / fixes. Always worth a go.
I think it was coded out ( in CS at least, from around 1.3 /1.4 )because people were using it for some dodgy purposes in CS....
Don't work in NS certainly..
Damn joooo haxors and valve....
I think it might have to be some sort of model replacement...pain in the bum, but less so than buying a new PC...
I've tried that cvar, no help. Also tried model replacement (though do note that I'm useless with that stuff so just tried renaming inf portal to replace phase model) and that still emitted the lighting which caused the FPS drop. It would be nice to be able to disable it...or at least replace it with some other form of effect that isnt so bad.
Oh, and any card GeForce or better -or- Radeon 7000 or better will have Hardware Transform and Lighting, which should drastically reduce the load on your CPU when calculating lighting. You can pick up a GeForce 256 or GeForce2 MX for under $30 at most stores, even cheaper used, and probably for free from your friend with the Radeon 9700.
Meanwhile, I either live with it or find a software solution.
"Err, try turning off 'High-Detail Particles' in the Multiplayer customization menu. That causes more lag than dynamic lighting."
Oddly enough, no, it doesn't, a fact which has surpised me ever since I started fiddling with the nstr. Particle systems and loads of poly's aren't much of a problem, it's just dynamic lighting ( especially in the HL engine ) causes serious performance drops for these cheapo intel cards.
Another strange thing is the dynamic lighting on, say "Unreal" or "Quake3" engine games seems to cause no real problems..?
If you have an older cheapo PC lying around you can check this out for yourself, it's quite odd, even the flashlights on HL or CS cause a similar drop..
It's not that important I suppose, but it would be nice to find a fix or way around this.
