Another GL idea

<div class="IPBDescription">Splinter rounds.</div>I was thinking about what Charlie(or was it Cory?) was saying in a recent Q&A about the changes from the LMG/GL to the current oldschool Ns1 rotary GL, that the reason for making this change was that there wasn't much of a trade-off with the LMG/GL i.e a Marine was getting a weapon with perhaps too much function in that it could lauch nades and have the range and hi mag capacity of the LMG.
This all makes sense but unfortunately a marine with the current GL has to change to the pistol if he/she gets stuck in CQB with an alien or risk using the GL and blowing themselves up in the process.
So my idea is to add fairly basic personal defence function to the GL. The GL could fire smart rounds (this is the future) that have a Dual function that are set by the Primary(Grenades) and Secondary(Metal Splinter Round) - two triggers. The Grenades themselves act as the standard grenade when fired with the Primary trigger if however the marine needs to defend himself at close range he could fire the grenade with the Secondary trigger which would fire the grenade differently so that the detonator is de-activated and the grenade shell simply splinters into fragments from the barrel of the grenade launcher in a rather crude shotgun fashion.
Now before anyone freaks out and says I've simply made a GL/Shotgun hybrid let me explain:
* The 'Splinter' metal fragments fired from the wide GL barrel would have a very large spread and vitually no range other than at very close range. Therefore it wouldn't have the range or damage of the Shotgun.
* Because it is being 'cycled' through the GL like the a normal grenade round it is only being fired at the same ROF as the GL which is obviously a lot slower than the Shotgun ROF.
* The other Trade-off is that you are using your rather limited amount of Grenades in a very inefficient way. But you are gaining effective if very basic Personal Defence.

The GL is designed to be a support-weapon, you shouldnt go rambo with it.. Giving people means to do so will give people less incentive to cooperate properly.
If used "the right way", the GL is really deadly. (or well, was in the last patch i played)
