Getting rid of carapace
It seems like carapace cause a lot of balance problems, and I don't find this upgrade pretty interesting. It's basically a game of numbers, where all the other aliens upgrade are about skills. I never played NS1, but I remember reading that skulks were smaller in that one. I didn't verify if its true, but it gave me that idea:

Instead of carapace, we could replace it with "slim" aliens. That upgrade could reduce the physical size of an aliens by like 15%, making them harder to shoot. Instead of helping aliens absorbing more bullets (it's not about skills), it could help aliens evade more bullets (this is about skills). A marine with a good aim would still be able to fight, and maybe kill aliens more easily, since they don't have carapace anymore. But a good alien could use it to its advantage, since one missed bullet can be the difference.

Sure, it would not be the most useful upgrade for Onos, but I don't think Silence is either. It would also be easier to balance an onos, since he can't buff its armor anymore. I think Skulks and Lerks could find this upgrade really interesting. Gorge too, especially when they hide behind their hydras and bombard from afar. I don't know if it would make a difference for Fades though.

The way aliens are structured, carapace doesn't fit. It's the only upgrade where you need to nerf it to balance for the buff and I think it's a sign that this upgrade doesn't belong there. I think giving more evade% instead of more armor points is an interesting trade-off.

How would you represent this? Literally scaling the width of the models would look pretty funky. Plus, it would only apply when a Kharaa is rushing directly at a marine (which is not always the case).

Check out some of the ideas in this post for talking about replacing Carapace with something else: http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=118789

Humm, not quite. Twitch players, based on their hand eye cord are able to hit down to a few pixels with out even breaking a sweat. This is the average play range of about age 17 down to 12 and even younger these days. Older twitch players break a sweat but can still hit them few pixels. Even on a blind target when being flanked and doing a 180. Ages 25-30 struggle with twitch play. And 30 up can only do it once in a blue moon. Even if they keep harnessing their skill.

As a kid in quake 2 could rail gun players from large distances away while both of us are moving at full speed and I could only see their head or heel or shoulder. Admittedly the NS two guns arnt ment to be accurate. Which could play in slim alien favor (except pistol). In this regard slim would do something. But when coming up against a twitch kiddy. You would of preferred the carapace.

Its a good idea though, it's been suggested a few times for NS 1 I should know I suggested its for movement. And celerity way back in NS one right around the time when morphic models started making there way into video games like fable. Celerity skulk would become slimmer more agile looking harder to hit. Silence the skulk would get padded feet bigger ears or the are we're the ears would be would morphe. Cara it would gain a heap more armor plates. Focus kharaa grow a heap of spikes extra teeth, cloaked kharaa gain a camo or black pattern, scent of fear gives them a adjusted head shape more like a bird, redemption would give them all glowing bellies like the gorge, adrenaline would give them more muscles.

So that this way every kharaa would look different base on their upgrades. Add variation. Can tell each other apart. Rines could look and go that's a cara onos. Just like kharaa look at a rine and go he's got a jet pack and a shot gun.

Not sure if it's been suggested for NS 2 sparks prolly good for it
