Poor Marines - Comm's Options

<div class="IPBDescription">1 skulk gets 3 marines!</div> I've been comming a bit recently, on pubs tho :/
Although I'm a regular marine on some servers they are higher level servers so prefer more experienced comms. So I have to practice on others.

Here's my problem. Poor Marines, I send 3 to a uninhabited hive to make a tf. The tf gets placed and 2 build and to my surprise 1 guards. I think thats all dandy so go off to the base, suddenly 'Marines under attack' about 1 second later I see the death msg of the guard, followed by the 2 others.
This occured again later at the other hive. Then they managed to get one up but by then they had fades and I'd spent all my res on tf's that got eaten.

btw I didn't make a phase gate 1st because the other marines had wandered off from the base so would never get there.

What can a comm do when the troops are this poor (or maybe aliens so good) I'm not going to 'SHOUT AT THEM' because it's not their fault they can't aim or they have poor situational awareness, but on the other hand all tactics will fail that I can think of.

I was thinking perhaps to build the phase 1st then distress beacon when they get eaten and send them back thru. Although they'll waste time getting ammo for 3 marines to kill a skulk.

    remember this is still a fps game

    marines will need their skillz

    so pretty much if ur a good comm, marines suck(at aiming, being cunning, bla bla), and aliens have their skillz, you'll pretty much still lose.

    3 marines eaten by 1 skulk:
    - it was 3 skulks, but only 1 got all the kills.
    - the skulk was hidden (e.g. generator hive, maintenance hive etc.)
    - 1 marine should build, not 2 <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->.
    - phase gate >>> everything else. A phase gate might let you recover, a tfac won't even help, until you have 3+ turrets.

    "Although they'll waste time getting ammo for 3 marines to kill a skulk." <- Yes, 8/10 marines will fill up with ammo just to walk into a phase gate and die in 5 seconds.... Common sense >>>> "l33t skillz". [even a marine that cannot aim will stop the skulk eating the phase gate for a few seconds]

    a phase should ALWAYS be the first thing you build in a hive, never tfacs.

    I once saw a skulk eat up 6 marines because they were being retards and shooting each other repeatedly.

    I once saw 4 marines get munched up by one skulk near the horseshoe on ns_eclipse even though I warned them I could hear a skulk nearby AND I was spamming them with med packs! yet they still got munched up <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The rest of the game went much the same way even <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->
    <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> got owned by a <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo--> and his health spray <!--emo&:angry:--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Things like this really put me off commanding on pubs.

    um, first off, im a comm a lot... second why a phase always first if your marines blow... turrets will do more damage... and as far as distress beacon, that cost 15 resources to do... and it has a small load time to work... i rather speed my resources on another infantry portal or two... phase gates are good, but turrets keep them at bay, and are the best equalizer for noob marines.

    as far as it goes for them to build... dont have any guards, let all 3 build, cause odds are, if they all blow, even having 2 guard is gonna mean 3 dead. So the faster those turrets are up, the better.... And ive noticed often times, yelling does help... If the noobs actually have speakers.

    When you are a vanilla marine, there are very few situations where you will need more than 3 clips each of lmg and pistol, including what's in your gun.

    Things that suck up your ammo are:
    1) Shooting at buildings. Solution: don't do it. Your lmg firing madness will just bring a skulk down on your backside. Of course there are exceptions to this one, but when there are lots of enemy buildings about, get a siege or GL, or at least something better than an lmg.
    2) You miss alot. Solution: you miss, therefore you die. Fixes itself, really. Just die and get back to 3 clips.
    3) Camping in a base for a really long time. Solution: Phase gate, or you're right next to the armory anyways.

    As soon as fades come out, your life expectancy drops, and 3 clips of each is often too much anyways.

    When to load up:
    1) You're about to assault a hive site. The game has just started or you're going from one hive to another, and it'll be a while before you get up another phase gate and can make a trip home.
    2) You're actually bothering to stick together, and are waiting for someone to spawn in base. Here you really just don't have anything better to do.
    3) You aren't a vanilla marine. This one contradicts the first sentance of my post, but I thought it needed pointing out.

    Now, what would be really neat is if there was an admin plug-in to count all the bullets that got wasted. It might be rather revealing, but certainly provide some sweet sweet humor.

    Side note: To those of you who don't already know, there is a graphical bug that doesn't show lmg and hmg ammo correctly (too large numbers). You can fill up beyond the point where it stops showing more ammo. Listen to the sounds the armory makes when you use it, and you'll be able to tell if you are actually full that way.

    Maybe you should revise your tactic? Phasegate should probably come first.

    Two worst marine performances so far with me as COM:

    Eearly game on ns_tanith. I send five (5) Marines from Reactor Room towards Cargo Storage. They get assaulted by one (1) Skulk head on, in the corridor leading from RR to CS. Skulk kills all Marines and runs off. I just sat and watched them go down one by one in amazement (didn't even drop a medkit since I was so sure the skulk would die SOMETIME). Crazy.

    On ns_nancy with 8vs8 or possibley 9vs9, the furthest the marines got on the map was about 2 foot inside the door to mess hall, and that was just twice. Took about 5 minutes to accomplish that. 99% of all attempts at advancing out of spawn was cut down just below the ramp leading from Marine Base. The marines even stuck together most of the time and tried to healo eachother. When the bile-bombs and Onos'es started pouring in we had yet to cap the res-node closest to MB. Insanely good skulkss or the worlds worst marines, I don't know, probably a combination.

    That's always so frustrating if your a commander, seeing your idiot marines get killed by one skulk. Or another thing that really raises my bloodpressure is marines who walk up to a offense chamber when attacking it.

    One of the few times i actually played comm on a public server, our base was rushed the moment the game started by ONE little alien, he took out all my marines so i hop out of the cc and pistol the little sob...

    Then he did it again... and again.... and again... then by this point they had three or four onos screaming in my ear, so... pfffft, dead(The marines i mean), i hoped out of the comm chair, did my little rambo thing with my jetpack and hmg (Landing on/between the onos and his legs, rofl) i killed one, then they bothered to take out the little turrets to put in base (A total of two because the n00b marines didnt follow orders... or wps) and got my **bleep bleep** smeared on the wall...

    Im not a good comm, but i know how to build (IF I HAVE ANYONE TO BUILD IT FOR ME!!!) but all in all it was a fun game... the onos didnt know what hit him...

    HAHAHAHAHAHA, id love to see an Exp. commander get a bunch of insabordanat n00bs to do what you want... its such a pain, and im sure id laugh

    NOTE: Please forgive the spelling, i just woke up and have not had my coffee

    NEVER Tfac first, build the phase gate first, then if they all die call a distress beac, as they're spawning in type 'ON SPAWN GO THROUGH THE GATE, DO NOT GRAB AMMO, DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT 200 **obscenity** ROUND OF AMMO'

    It generally works for me, although I use VC.

    Acctually voice com makes a huge difference when you've got newbie marines.

    It's alot easier to talk than to type and afew newb marines who can hear you and do what you say can be better than one so called veteran who wonders off and starts telling you he wants a res point and TF in an undefendable possition between their first hive and your base.

    <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Of course there are some situations where the youre marines are simply outplayed by the aliens and there's nothing you can do. I'll still rely on my marines (phase gate) rather than on turrets because if you get up a phasegate you can generally scream enough and get people to die spawn and leap through it and you will eventually kill the skulks.

    If people won't jump through the phase gate when I tell them to, I log out and go rambo.. No point in having a good player wasting time in the com chair when no one follows orders, may aswell have that player in the field infiltrating to the position to build the gates then call in the rest of the team.
