general praise and such!
hey all!
Long time lurker and an old NS1 player here.
I actually bought into the game in the early stages (i think i had my first matches in build 158 or something)
the playability and performance of the game at this stage (build 216) is great.. hands down! i swear on some random TSA marines grave!
I dont understand what all the fuss is about regarding the general performance... I may not be a competitive player or anything thou i do enjoy a fair fight and i can hardly say i have been in a fight with any alien vs any marine and vice versa and lost on account of the performance. The only thing i can blame is myself and i know this because i do loose and win firefights in battlefield 3 all the time too!
The specs of my computer is nothing to write home about
AMD x6 1055t@2800mhz
AMD radeon 4850 512mb ram
various other bits n' pieces to keep it running along
no ssd's or crazyclocked sandy bridges, no black magic and ritual offerings of virgins to NS2HD (which i have followed from the very nervous and shaky begginings (the first video actually))
Between school, work and being occasionally drunk i log into steam and bring up NS2 to become amazed of all the awesome that's hitting my face!
To have a laugh at the stupid skulks i'm shooting and the noob marines i'm gnawing at the moment.
A heartfelt congrats from me here in rainy sweden to all of you ######s in sunny SoCal! unknown worlds! YOU ROCK
I KNOW that i will play some fantastic games of siege / ladderwars / combat / actual NS / Gorge vs. ARC kart racing in the future. Those 30 bucks or whatever it was one year ago is probably my best spent 30 or whatever dollars ever...
I <3 you

Pics of r_stats or I declare yee one of Flayra's troll-accounts.
That said, I don't think the majority of players are complaining about barley getting 20 fps for ###### and giggles.
The competetive players or the ones prospecting to become a competetive player is most certainly already running top notch hardware which more or less nullifies any performance issues.
People that are getting massive fps penalties even looking at a firefight are probably having some other problem with the general config / conflict / state of their system.
another 5 ören from me
cheers

great compared to a year ago, lol
True true! maby i were a little unclear.
I dont think everyone even notices the fpsdrops or even care, i certainly dont because i dont play at that level of competetiveness. The guys gaming at that level are a tough bunch to satisfy even for a big developer and i think many of them run very high end gear capable of running virtually everything. When a game comes along that brings those computers to a crawl (for various reasons, not intentionally with super duper sweet unreal engine 4 graphics) someone is bound to get annoyed.
I strongly believe that many of the extreme performance issues that is being talked about on this forum is due to the general healthiness of the afflicted systems.
Driver issues, conflicts, backgroud tasks, you name it. My computer is not the tidiest or the best kept, but i do know what is running, why and when: and that means ALOT.
As far as the game has come since the early days are quite staggering i must say. I ran NS2 back then on the same computer as i do now and the performance has maby not doubled, BUT it has smoothed out something fiercly, instead of fps drops to 1 or 2 it drops to 19... i'm happy with that as a non competetive player playing for stuffs and giggles. A competetive player running a OC'ed sandy on a 7970 maby has drops to 30-35 fps in ridicoulously crowded fight (thats just me guessing)(on a good server ofcourse, no other way to compete is there? :)

Setting aside the fact that "great" is entirely subjective, compare that to the performance in betas for Firefall or BF3, which were released to much fanfare and ended up delivering slideshow messes. This beta outclasses several others I've played in terms of performance.
Just ignore the people who like to "lerk" about on the forums and pounce on any new poster who dares to mention they are enjoying the game, and attempt to convince these players that they are in fact crazy and wrong and could not possibly be having fun playing NS2 in its current state.
We do have lots more optimzations, bug fixes, balance changes, and general improvements on the way, as well as the Exosuit and some new maps.

UWE want those competitive players as they tend to stick around in the long run and generally help improve the game
The game is playable for most people ( not news to anyone) but if the low standards of a casual player were good enough, the game could have been released months ago
Enjoy!
I very much hope to see this game running smoothly on more or less everything later. The competetive scene will be awesome!

And the only picture where he's fighting marines is under 20. I'm sorry, but that isn't very good. I get about the same thing, and it feels unplayable at times.
Good luck!

Don't forget PrimalScream for onos and Webstalk's(new version of webs right? oh please, say yes ) for gorge?! =)
Don't discount the validity of other people's 'fuss' about performance however. Server performance is a huge hurdle that needs to be overcome if NS2 has any aspirations of real, affordable mainstream success. The game is aiming for 32 player yet at the moment it will only run 18 players at 30 ticks (CS runs 3-6 times higher) and on extremely overclocked sandybridges at that.
Sure the client runs pretty decently if you consider 20-30 fps decent, but keep in mind that there is still literally NO viable commercial server solution out there that doesn't involve overclocking up around 5ghz.
As a PT i might not be the most reliable source. But i admit that the last few patches, i didn't enjoy the game very much. performance was one reason, but the biggest was that it was not even remotely balanced. For me that changed with 216. I really love that build. for me with my particular hardware specs performance is very much acceptable to have fun, and more important, the game is somewhat balanced. a 50/50 win/loss ratio might not mean its balanced (there could be 1 OP strategy on every side), but from my games it meant the game is much much better now.
So, test the game again, for me the 216 is the best patch yet (with all its rough edges that need to be smoothed out now).
pistol snipe worked better than before. i enjoyed jp movement - perhaps a bit op. for me, still not quite there with the vanilla marine & skulk movement - though it is getting much smoother. some frustrating geometry hangups that i have to learn to deal with. wall jump - with the debug speed - not getting the benefit, really, even with multiple good jumps in a row (perhaps there's a secret i'm not getting / finding).
enjoy the core gp debates on this board.
I don't like 216 or the previous ones that started offloading stuff to the client, making my PC unhappy. Simply too much FPS being stolen from me :D I like 217 more with the magic Max and Dushan stuff
215 performed better for me somehow then 216. The thing is though, Spark might have performance issues, but compatibility is quite amazing.
I hope to see you in game soon (and be fragged!)
Challenge accepted sir, duel at dawn!

i'm sorry but that's completely disrespectful to your fanbase, many of whom STILL have issues with the performance of this game. Did you whip out your UWE blinders for this one?
You cannot on the one hand say that the devs are aware of the performance issues and that they're nowhere near what they need to be, then on the other hand praise the great performance of the game.
Even with the recent performance gains, I would qualify my experience with the engine as on the low end of "acceptable" - this is a night and day increase from the low point of ns2 optimization, but please do us all a favor and don't ###### over a portion of your fanbase.
It is important to remain positive about the outlooks of the game, WITHOUT denigrating those of us who have been here from the beginning, those of us who helped make this entire game possible. Please consider this as a PR representative for the company.
I wasn't saying his 20 FPS is great performance, I was merely saying that if he is enjoying the game, then there's no need for everyone to convince him otherwise, due to their general unhappyness. We understand that the game is not performing as well as should be expected for a large majority of the players, and are working diligently, days, nights and weekends to improve it. Nuff said.
