Isnt private beta access detrimental?

It sucks I have several friends who bought the game after the steam preorder release, and they cant play with me until October.

I feel like there is no reason to exclude people based on when they preordered.

Now i feel like a ###### because i get to play and they dont.

deal with it, if you wanted them to play maybe you should have gotten them to preorder before steam.

Not that detrimental really. Like any other game they just have to wait for release. It is not that long even...

Actually, an open beta is probably more detrimental than a closed beta. People have a bad habit of assuming that a beta is actually just a demo...and it's totally not. So if the beta doesn't stack up (And it often won't because of performance issues, bugs, etc), then they badmouth it and spread negativity...

It's better to keep people like that away from betas.

I would think that with all the complaints about performance (even though we are still in beta) that perhaps UWE didn't want an influx of further frustration. Releasing on Steam is also a lot more significant, it sort of gives it more of an 'official' status.

I imagine they just want to focus 100% on getting this game great for 1.0, rather than having to deal with a load of new players with new questions, frustrations, etc...

I think it is a good idea.

The game has been available for pre-order for over 3 years which would get them alpha/beta access. They only have to wait a short time. I'm afraid that they will just have to deal with it. No where said they would get beta access on steam.

you have all made very good points.

As for it being available for almost 3 years. No one but the most diehard ns fan would have ponied up the money back then, and when I "preordered" a little over 2 years ago, i didnt really expect anything to come of it.

I dont think that people that preorder it, if they got beta access, would mind some betaness in the beta.

I've preordered video games before. Once I had done so, I would then get very excited for the release. I suppose that the people who have less than two months left until they can play a complete version of Natural Selection 2 feel a similar level of excitement.

You should have heard the kicking and screaming during the ALPHA. Trust me, people are dumb enough to complain about beta being beta.

I purchased the game because I want to play it. Why wouldn't I want to have access to the beta? So why can't I play it now? Yeah the game is in beta but come on, it is close to coming out. It cannot be THAT far from the final product at this point.

Honestly, I really just want to play the game after watching all the videos and gameplay of the game. That is the reason why I purchased it in the first place. I already put my money where my mouth is so come on UWE open the beta! At least to ALL preorderers!

And you will get to play it! The same day every other Steam pre-order does. :)

Then I am sure back in "your day", you remember playing the entire first chapter of DOOM for free as freeware?
Back in your day you could download Quake II or Starsiege Tribes on the internet and play online for free, albeit illegally.
    I don't see your point.

Besides, this isn't your day, we are in a world where Free To Play games are viable.

I am perfectly fine in waiting. I just don't understand why I need to when there is a beta I would love to
participate in and for some reason being discluded from even though I am a paying customer.

Why? Because I want to play this computer game? Do you not want more people to invade your tight knit community?
Am I not one of you?
    I don't understand...
Why am I being berated by you people for my interest in a mutual hobby?

No, because you are acting immaturely even though it's been explained that you ordered too late. Masking your whining as "explaining why it is unfair/detrimental/whatever" will not change the outcome.

I'd be upset if I missed the cutoff for something by a few days as well (believe me, I've found out about stuff just too late before), but you don't need to make a scene here.

Well since this is going no where, I shall lock it.

But to answer the question: I am sorry you feel crappy for being able to play. I am sure you can feel much better by teaching your friends as much as you can on release day games in return. The beta has been closed for a variety of reasons, but they will not have to wait long.
