Learning the maps.

In NS2 it is particularly important to learn the maps, and unfortunately also very difficult due to the complexity of maps, and the vent systems. When playing I am often holding down the C key trying to find the best way to get around, but that is a terrible way of learning the map since its kind of like using your gps on your car and you never actually learn the roads.

NS2 wiki has maps but they don't have resource nodes drawn in or room names which are also important to learn. How are people learning the maps? Just through playing alot?

Well you can always load up the map and run around on your own to get a feel for it. It rarely takes long to get a feel for the layout of most NS2 maps; they tend to have a general underlying symmetry.

Next patch will have an explore mode, it will allow you to easily load up all maps and try all weapons. lifeforms, abilities and commander mode.

Besides the maps I still remember from NS1 I try to use the mini-map instead of the big map so you are much more aware of your actual surroundings but have something to get basic orientation. It helps but its you have to control your urge to press the map key;)

Sad that the Aliens dont have a mini-map (and I dont see why because they also have the big map...)

Minimap for the Marines is projected onto their visor which acts as a filter over their eyes.

The aliens have eyes in their mouth.... which is why even the hud fades away. It is for immersion..

for the casual players i would like to see a way to place personal waypoints on the map that will give you the same directions as if a commander gave you that waypoint.

from that point of view the normal map should not be viewable as well as an alien... so it does not make that much sense...

By pressing C and dying while trying to navigate. A lot.

I was worried too about not learning the maps because of sitting on the map. What I've found is best is to pick one side of the map from spawn and go that way every time unless your team really needs you elsewhere. By the end of a 20 minute game you should have a good feel for 25% of the map that way.

I had dozens of hours played before I finally started to get a grip on them.

Biggest problem in learning the maps is that everything looks the same. There really needs to be more different stuff. It could even pop up a name on screen when you enter a named zone like Onos bar or somethin.

Ive never had any trouble learning maps in any other game ever in all my years of gaming, so i do think that the problem isnt on my end.

And i played Wolfenstein 3d and i could navigate without maps and Doom 1 and 2, not to mention Duke Nukem 3d.

Everything just looks the same in Natural selection 2. Its really important you make sure different parts have different textures and such, that was why i was possible to navigate Wolfenstein 3d.

Could we please, please get the minimap in the upper left corner for aliens!? I'm running around with the big map constantly on as an alien, which makes navigation a lot harder and deadlier.

here's a tip: everyone plays with their minimap up from time to time. if you watch competitive streams you will see players check their minimaps constantly. get used to it, learn to love it. it will save your life, and the life of your buddies when you spot enemies approaching.

You generally want to look at your minimap often anyway, just to see what's going on on the rest of the map, helping your comm, spotting enemies in advance, etc etc. Though I agree it couldn't hurt to give aliens the option to have a small minimap as well. Personally I got used to it, you'll learn the maps in due time but it does take a bit longer than in other games for sure.

When I started on NS1, I couldn't figure out where the heck I was going. But after a while, I knew instinctively where everything was, even just by name. You still needed to check the minimap for the intel it provided, but actually navigating didn't require it anymore.

Basically, what I'm saying is, it seems hard now, but you'll get used to it :)

Hi there,

I can just say, you will learn the maps after some time. Just play enough matches.
But this also gives me somehow an idea why people don't use their minimaps enough.
I open the map with C like every few seconds (not in combat, but while running or building or whatever) just to see what is happening.
Where are enemies, which buildings are blinking (aka being attacked) and so on. Often I am the first person shouting that something is under attack because I
maintain a great map awareness while playing.
Most other players don't...
So people, use C more often!

You can also "start game" and just run your own listen server with any map you want and run around. Try 'cheats 1' to enable a buncha cheats too.

Wha..??? Wolfenstein 3D looked almost exactly the same everywhere in the game. No to mention it was more or less a linear game.

Since apparently this opinion actually exists... If aliens shouldn't have a minimap, why should they have a map, or in fact, why should they have any HUD at all?

Sure. But that's true for everything. The problem isn't that it's forever impossible to navigate without a minimap, it's that it significantly steepens the map-learning curve. I'm seriously considering going Marines only until I have memorized all the maps just so I can learn the maps faster, which is ridiculous.

One really big issue with learning the maps is infestation. A room you once recognized covered in infestation can be completely different. Also I've seen the DI covering up vents sometimes and hiding them completely. Granted I think that's a good thing, to a degree - vents should belong to the aliens - but still, if you didn't know a vent was there, you'd never be able to tell.
