Learning the maps.

In NS2 it is particularly important to learn the maps, and unfortunately also very difficult due to the complexity of maps, and the vent systems. When playing I am often holding down the C key trying to find the best way to get around, but that is a terrible way of learning the map since its kind of like using your gps on your car and you never actually learn the roads.
NS2 wiki has maps but they don't have resource nodes drawn in or room names which are also important to learn. How are people learning the maps? Just through playing alot?

Sad that the Aliens dont have a mini-map (and I dont see why because they also have the big map...)
The aliens have eyes in their mouth.... which is why even the hud fades away. It is for immersion..
from that point of view the normal map should not be viewable as well as an alien... so it does not make that much sense...

I had dozens of hours played before I finally started to get a grip on them.
Ive never had any trouble learning maps in any other game ever in all my years of gaming, so i do think that the problem isnt on my end.
And i played Wolfenstein 3d and i could navigate without maps and Doom 1 and 2, not to mention Duke Nukem 3d.
Everything just looks the same in Natural selection 2. Its really important you make sure different parts have different textures and such, that was why i was possible to navigate Wolfenstein 3d.

Look pretty distinctive to me.

here's a tip: everyone plays with their minimap up from time to time. if you watch competitive streams you will see players check their minimaps constantly. get used to it, learn to love it. it will save your life, and the life of your buddies when you spot enemies approaching.
Basically, what I'm saying is, it seems hard now, but you'll get used to it :)
I can just say, you will learn the maps after some time. Just play enough matches.
But this also gives me somehow an idea why people don't use their minimaps enough.
I open the map with C like every few seconds (not in combat, but while running or building or whatever) just to see what is happening.
Where are enemies, which buildings are blinking (aka being attacked) and so on. Often I am the first person shouting that something is under attack because I
maintain a great map awareness while playing.
Most other players don't...
So people, use C more often!

Wha..??? Wolfenstein 3D looked almost exactly the same everywhere in the game. No to mention it was more or less a linear game.

Since apparently this opinion actually exists... If aliens shouldn't have a minimap, why should they have a map, or in fact, why should they have any HUD at all?

But after a while, I knew instinctively where everything was, even just by name. You still needed to check the minimap for the intel it provided, but actually navigating didn't require it anymore.

Sure. But that's true for everything. The problem isn't that it's forever impossible to navigate without a minimap, it's that it significantly steepens the map-learning curve. I'm seriously considering going Marines only until I have memorized all the maps just so I can learn the maps faster, which is ridiculous.
