A simple question...

I know the release is just around the corner and I will find out the answer to this soon enough but after reading a great deal on the forums I wanted to ask this.
If I greatly enjoyed ns1 will I greatly enjoy ns2?
It's a simple question but most likely will have complicated answers, and I want to know if you vets enjoy the game and think a former player will too. I know forums for any game tend to highlight mostly flaws in game so I wanted to have a thread with pros as well as cons.
So will I have fun in ns2? Will you? Why/why not? What to you love/hate about ns2 when compared with the original?
(I haven't played beta, but I have preordered)

Watch some twitch.tv casted matches to get yourself pumped up and make sure you learn some basic changes before you come in.
Then, make an account at ensl.org and do some gathers.
It takes a while to have to accept that this is a NEW GAME, it isnt simply NS1 with revamped graphics.
If you hold onto all that made NS1 great you will find it quite hard to enjoy NS2
But learn and adapt to the new features and gameplay mechanics (though a lot of it still needs tweaking imho) and you will come to like what UWE have produced
For me personally, its still possible to have great matches and plenty of fun, but in the back of my mind i am always holding onto the even greater matches i have had from NS1
With all that though, yes you can enjoy NS2 if you enjoyed NS1 =]
It still a diamond in the rough with some balance issues, but still miles ahead of where NS1 was on launch, 10 year ago.
I'd say it's somewhere between 2.0 and 3.0.
To elaborate slightly, it depends on your expectations.
The biggest factor in that question is that you have aged, probably 7 to 10 years. If you were in your early teens when you played NS1, your expectations about games were probably pretty rudimentary. If you were in your 20s or older, your expectations have probably stayed in line with the advancements made to games in general.
Also, some aspects of game development in general have matured a lot over the past 10 years, not just the technical improvements, but stuff like gaming psychology (rewards) and level design. So at some level you have to compare what you'd rather be playing across genres. That's comparison is made doubly tricky because although the core idea of a fps/rts hybrid seems to have a lot to offer, there haven't been many titles. It's hard to tell what works and what doesn't (compared to sports sims for example). The genre is still pretty immature.
For the most part, gameplay is the same. If you were strongly attached to a particular mechanic, it could go either way (skulks still parasite & 2 bite kill in the early game; arcs are quite different to siege cannons).
Another factor that brings me back to NS2 is the depth of gameplay and mastery. Some elitists might scoff, but for me there's a huge scope for mastery in NS2. If you're just plain really, really good at FPS, the importance of the RTS stuff crumbles. If you're like me, regularly outclassed by better twitch players, you can compensate through the RTS elements. Situational awareness, strategic counter-attacks, resource manipulation etc.
Lastly, there are many roles to play and learn so NS2 has longevity in that sense. Combined with that, we're always playing 'catch up' to the moving goal posts offered through each new patch, and that's likely to continue post-release.
If you liked the mechanics behind the first game, and the details which set it apart from other games, then yes, you will like it.
In the end, I was shocked by the amount of changes that there were from NS1. I loved NS1 and I probably have about 500 hours logged into NS2.
In a good team they actually still do, gorges can speed up building.
i think gorges are (in pubs at least) underrated.
if you go fast 2nd hive, they are really helpful.
if you need res fast, they are really important.
I often go gorge after the 1st scouting as skulk to help commander. This way, the res tower is built faster, thus helping all the team to evolve early. then if needed I change to skulk again: the price is not so high, like 2 welders if i'm not wrong.
I would be cautious with this kind of statement. I played Diablo 3 >100 h and now i hate it because it is such a letdown compared to it's predecessor. It is not just because of the RMA but also because they cut so many cool features that were there in D2.
I dont expect NS2 to turn out similarly, after all UWE is doing excessive beta testing.
That's no different from NS1.
It is going to mix of fun, hope and frustration regardless.
Great point, and yeah I saw ns2c, ill have to keep an eye on it. I hope in time the bugs/annoyances get ironed out.
Great comments so far though guys, Im getting a pretty well rounded/wide view of peoples thoughts.
Now NS2 it is a fun game but not yet to were NS1 was. But it is still a work in progress and hopefully will because just as great if not greater than NS1.
