3rd-4th November (Re-arranged)
EDIT ----- Due to a conflict with another tournament the tournament dates have been changed to 3rd & 4th November
NS2League.com, ModBeans.com, NS2Hub.com and NS2Stats.org present
The NS2 Release Cup
Tournament for up to 16 teams, depending on player registrations.
Tournament Layout:
Assuming 16 teams, tournament will be:
Group Stages:
4 groups of 4 teams in a round robin - 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw.
Maps will be:
Round 1 - NS2_Summit
Round 2 - NS2_Veil
Round 3 - NS2_Tram
Highest seeded team chooses server, and is Marine 1st round.
If a group game has 1 US and 1 EU team, the map will be played on 2 servers, with the server chosen by the marine team.
Winners and 2nd place from each group move forward into a straight elimination finals.
Places will be decided by Points, Head-Head, Round W/L Ratio. A tie after these conditions would induce a tiebreaker.
Quarter Finals:
Map - NS2_Summit
G1W v G2RU, G2W v G1RU, G3W v G4RU, G4W v G3RU.
Group winners will have the choice of Server and be Marines 1st.
If a game has 1 US and 1 EU team, the map will be played on 2 servers, with the server chosen by the Marine team.
In the event of a tie after first 2 rounds, a decider will be played. GW will choose their team in decider (and thus server in NA v EU situation).
Semi-Finals:
Map - NS2_Tram
Team with the Highest Round win/loss ratio will choose server and play Marines first.
In the event of a tied w/l, head-head from group stage (if aplicable will be used). Further back is points scored in group stage, then are teams GW vs GRU? If still a tie, a coin toss will decide who picks server.
If a game has 1 US and 1 EU team, the map will be played on 2 servers, with the server chosen by the Marine team.
In the event of a tie after first 2 rounds, a decider will be played. The team that picked first will choose their team in decider (and thus server in NA v EU situation).
If the teams were chosen by coin toss, another coin toss will take place with the other team calling the result.
Final:
Maps - NS2_Veil & NS2_Tram
Best of 5
Team with the Highest Round win/loss ratio (or count back outlined above) will choose server and play Marines first.
First 2 games will be both played on ns2_Veil and 1 server.
After 2 rounds, server will swap (if required) and the other team will play Marines first. Map will be NS2_Tram.
If the game is tied at 2-2, a decider will be played on NS2_Summit. First team gets to pick server again and play Marines first.
If the teams were chosen by coin toss, another coin toss will take place with the other team calling the result.
Rules:
All Team players, Referees and Casters must be on the server 10 mins before game. Over-running of other games, is pretty much the only valid excuse not to be there.
Teams can only field players from their registered list.
If players/teams have any issues regarding the match, they need to be brought to the attention of the referee at least 5 mins before the match starts. Any issues not resolved before game time will have to be resolved after the match has completed. Teams will have 1 5min delay they can call on in the RR stages, and 1 in the Knockout stages. Delays from over-running games will not require a team delay to be used.
Teams will be allowed a minimum 15 mins break between games, hopefully the organisation will allow a much longer time. In case of over-runs, this 15min break may be abolished at organisers decision.
Referees/Tournament Officials decisions in any disputes are final.
Time slots will be announced when line-ups of teams are in.
Seedings will be done based on a points system for all tournaments played so far in NS2.
Teams can each register up to 10 players. Only players registered may participate in the tournament.
We will be running 8, 12 or 16 teams, so it will be first come, first served up to the appropriate player limit.
8 teams registered for the tournament will see the tournament scaled down appropriately. (2 Groups of 4, straight into semi-finals).
12 registrations, We will make 3 groups containing 4 teams, with only the group winners and the highest scoring runner-up going through, straight into semi-final. A tie for runner-up will be decided on W/L ratio, and if not resolved through that, will be a direct playoff.
Feedback and comments on these rules and interest in the competition to be posted in this thread.
For now, please email me with initial clan signups - signups@modbeans.com, we will be adding a proper sign-up system to the ns2league site soon.
Amendments
On the 2nd match of each game, the team that did not pick the server will have the choice of whether they want to change server or not, regardless of where they are located, as it was pointed out that even teams on the same continent may have huge ping differences between them.

Looking for additional casters too. Unfortunately Ryne and Zeikko are unavailable. ArcL!ght, if you read this thread, are you available?

I would suggest that the lower ranked/seeded team has always the possiblity to play the secod round in the server they have decided and not just in EU vs NA cases. The reason is obvious when you get teams from South America, Asia or Australia and even when a Southern European team is playing against a Nordic team because the ping from Spain to Sweden is often higher than for example the ping from New York to Sweden.
But you kinda knew that already :P
I really like the format, excited to see how RR in group plays will work out :)
In the English Football league, you get 3 points for a win, and 1 for a draw. Winning a match is worth more than drawing two matches, but drawing 2 matches would give you the same number of points as 1 win if a win was only 2 points. Also in the football world cup, which this tournament is a direct emulation of, results are scored in the same way. A win is worth 3 draws.

I certainly agree with your point, but we also don't want teams swapping servers just for the sake of it. How about if lower ranked team is pinging over a certain amount to the server, say 100, they get the choice of swapping servers?

Thanks for advising in this thread, if you could also send an email to the address provided, I would be most grateful ;)
In Football it makes sense because you're playing just one match, but in NS2 you're playing 2 matches so it's hard for me to see why you would get more points per match for winning 2 matches compared to winning just one. That rule is equivalent to getting an extra point in the Football League if you also won your previous match in the League.

Sure, but the pings change all the time, players have different pings and you can artificially higher your ping thus it's pretty much the same than letting everybody to pick the server. Other than your option can potentially cause some drama is someone decides to abuse the rule.
1 match, 2 rounds. Football is 1 match, with 2 halves. Both teams swap sides at half-time :) I personally see a match win as more valuable than being able to hold your own marine round. There has been much debate over the years about 2 or 3 points for a win in many sports. I have come down on the side of 3 points. This method makes the chances of tied scores less likely. It is a test, we are still in the early phases of tournaments for NS2. We will stick with this system as a tester to see how it plays out, if it doesn't work, it can be changed in future tournaments. :)

Valid point, we will change the rules to allow the lower ranked team to choose if they wish to swap server after the 1st round is complete.
Keep these discussions coming. There are some things that won't work, and some things that need to be tested. I feel the 3 points needs to be tested, the sticking on server won't work, as you've pointed out :)
Also, are you going to sign into steam today? haha, I have a couple of questions :)
Not unless the goals start from 0 on the second half and the other team has no chance of gaining the 3 points after being outscored in the first round.
I would say that the issue we have here is totally different from the traditional sports you're referring to.

I will in about 2 hours. :)

Most 1-1 draws are the marine teams winning. I don't think a team that wins alien and marine rounds should only have the same number of points as a team that wins two marine rounds, especially as the game is a little marine-sided at the moment. A win with aliens and marines should be rewarded sufficiently. Again, this is just opinions, and I think this is something worth trying, for better or worse.
I fully take your points on board, but I would like to test-drive this idea, as i think it could work.

I was hoping since Hugh has posted in the forum since this topic was made live, that he would have mentioned something, if I was stepping on UWE's toes, but as yet I haven't heard anything officially, only a rumour.
I will keep pestering UWE, until I get a confirm or deny for these dates. If anyone has contact with any members of UWE, please give them a nudge in my direction. This is getting frustrating...
edit: add me on steam :)

Are you referring to the qualifiers for the ESL tournament? The actual tournament was officially announced by tweet last week, although I assume there will be a detailed news post (minds will be blown) about it in the near future. It follows from the announced date for the tournament that the dates for the qualifier will have to be either the launch weekend or the weekend after that. Considering the time needed organize the practicalities, launch weekend seems like the obvious choice.
Yes I am. It does seem like the obvious choice, but some confirmation would be nice... As soon as I know either way I can reschedule or not, but currently I am in limbo. I don't want to reschedule for nothing, so I would like something concrete rather than best guesses :P

Once we have confirmed when it will be happening, I will :)
We are rescheduling this tournament for Nov 3rd-4th. This is the weekend after release, so it could get a bit crazy :)
