Control groups, making them easier to use

You know, the ctrl+number assigned groups!
From commanding more pub games than I'd care to admit and a fair few competitive ones, I have to say all in all I'm pleased with the current commander UI. However, there are a few things that I would love to see implemented, to better help this teamwork that everyone speaks about.
Today, it's about groups.
If I assign 3 marines to a group, I'd love for them to be able to see the other group members on the minimap, showing up as red or orange or pink or whatever, a different colour to distinguish them from all the other marines. That way, I can just assign people to a group and tell them to stick with their group, without them running around like headless ducks not knowing who the other group members are and where they are. I reckon if you assign one person to several groups he should show up in all groups the same way as for one.
This is what I had in mind:

It's unobtrusive (for those of us who like our monitor real estate), intuitive (oh look, the red guys are my squadmates) and allows easier assignments for commanders (less frustration, more funtimes).
Edit: Want to clarify that this is something I'd like to see for both marines and aliens, no reason to give UI/teamwork improvements like this to one side only.
Thoughts?

my only complaint would be that using the color red looks like the enemy on the map, would have to be something like green for your squad and blue for all other players not in your squad(like most other games have) or something.
Edit: Oh, you mean individuals being able to set up a group with others without the commanders intervention? Sounds cool, not sure how it'd work in practice but I like the idea.
++++
So something like this.

Commander selects 3 marines.

Comm presses ctrl+1, they are now in squad 1...or Com presses ctrl+5, squad 5, ect..

Comm selects a squad grouping and those marine players are highlighted on the map.

Marine players can see which squad they are in displayed on their UI, and other squadmates on the minimap are of a different color from other marines.

I'd keep it so players can only be in one squad grouping at a time. It would get a bit messy. Just automatically remove them from their prior squad once added to a new one.
