<div class="IPBDescription">is that email right?</div>ok lets do the math. email said 65,000 preordered but 40,000 free copies were given out to those who preordered before steam.
so... 40,000 + 40,000 = at least 80,000
or is he not counting free copies?
or is he counting 40,000 preorders + gifts those who activated?
or 40,000 before steam and 20,000 after steam?
or 40k+40k+65k (steam)
my head hurts >.< i just want to know how big the player base may be lol

The gifted copies wouldn't really be "Preorders" since they weren't actually ordered.
?? 000 in the first 2 weeks
we are clearly not going to have enough servers

This seems like something that should be worked on.
Bring on the servers!

Although i agree that we need more servers this is usually done incrementally after release, nobody wants to upkeep servers now while there still aren't that many players.
I doubt this includes free copies
IIRC, thats' more than 3 times what the angel investors put in to get UWE off the ground ($500,000?)

simple if you think about it for more than 5 seconds.
Haha, calculation error :D
In conclusion we all know you work hard and love your work, also if your game does kick off and you all become millionaires can we get something other then. Black armor for helping out? Like a gorge plushy!
It would be interesting if Hugh would do interviews with Charlie and others, looking back on the project.
UWE... we, the community, care.
And yeah, money wise the games industry (and any related 3d/art really) sucks in comparison to the amount of knowledge/talent/time & dedication you need to succeed in it.
Everyone is going by these 100k orders, and seem to be assuming that 100k will be attempting to play on the current number of servers.
As it currently stands, looking at the nanogrid server browser each night, a vast majority of currently existing servers are empty most of the time. Furthermore, it seems during nightly peaks, the player count runs up to roughly 300-400 players at any given time. Considering there were 45k pre-orders that have access to the beta, that works out to about 1% of those players actually playing simultaneously during the evening hours. Even if more players started playing simultaneously, right now there is enough "space" for something around 1000 players across all servers.
Now, I get that the servers may not be the best servers, or they may not be in the best regional locations for some players, but I think this issue might be a little overblown.
If anything, the bigger issue is the specs required for a good server being too high, which then would mean that the number of servers that run the required hardware may be lower.
Consider, though, that once the game goes 1.0, there may/will be more servers going up on top of the current ones. But I doubt all 100k+ players will be trying to play simultaneously.
Finally, the only area I can see where there will be issues getting onto a server are places where it's currently popular to play at (such as the All-In servers, for me, currently.) They have 3 servers, and are already fully filled during the evening as it is. More players trying to play will fill those servers even faster, creating the illusion of not having enough servers to play on, when in fact there are tons of other servers available. We're simply trying to play on a preferred server, and in that case, it's not UWE's issue, it's down to the community to bring up more servers.
Just a thought for anyone who wants to read this, and actually has an open mind about it..
When this game launches, suddenly a lot of preorders are going to want to come back and start playing, at least initially to see how the game has turned out. The first couple days will probably see a big spike of players. There's nowhere near the amount of servers ready for that influx. From personal experience watching the launch of another recent indie game (Torchlight 2), having 100k players try to do anything all at once will turn lots of best laid plans into a heaping pile of slag.
It's not like I'm hoping that no one plays the game or anything, we want more people! But that's a really big preorder number. Are there any plans to have a bunch of servers put into operation? Should we as the community step up and try to set more servers up?
I guess I could forego playing the first couple days after launch and instead set up my home computer as a server, it's got a 3570k that I can overclock. My internet connection is not great though.
Yes, we are prepared for this. We have plans in place, so it should not be a problem on launch.

how many people were working on the game in the 1st year ... 2nd year ... 3rd year etc. ?
were there other revenue sources ? (zen of sudoku :P )
how much capital investment was put into the business ?
and like pere said, they may take lower wages for shares etc. You or I dont know their personal financial situations, as for me, if i was a game developer i would work at UWE just for the work experience (i know for most of the devs this is their 1st major game :P )
now add 1.625 million on top of that ...
