Holy ###### this community has changed over the years. we either all got old, or some asscracks showed up.

I remember my first few comms in NS1, people were helpful, saying what to build and whatnot. now all I read is people asking for leg breaks and fire kills.

It's called humour. Of course I don't want people to break the legs of new comers, how is that even possible over a game? The absurdity of my statement alone should have been enough to indicate it was a joke.

I know what it is, I wasnt being serious. And Im also sure no legs can be broken over the internet (not over a game, I live in south amerca, ive seen people get shot over a game :P)

The problem with humor in this thread is that OP is asking for constructive comments, and that wish is being largely ignored.

WHY do we need to actually consider how to treat newbies any differently? Easy!

1. NS2 has a steep learning curve. Apart from the Commander highlighting and slowly taking the time to read a structure, or the little tag above the structure's name, there's nothing telling players what structures do.
2. NS2 has already been seeded by Beta-Veterans. Just try to name a game that's in a similar situation. Half of our community has years of experience, and the other half will have their asses handed to them. Do you think ALL people will be kind? You're mistaken. I'm betting many vets will revel in the fact that they can now own the noobs and put them in their place.

Those veterans probably got their behinds handed to them constantly on NS1, so now they have a chance to take it out on others.

All those years of frustration must do a number of a person :P

Okay. So, seriously... :o We could of course answer questions on the servers, even if it means we get fewer kills while doing so. Oh, and those of you that tend to obliterate the opposite team with Shotguns or as Fade, maybe the weeks after release will be a great time to fine tune your Gorge and Flamethrower skills.

Fair enough :p I thought you was being serious and didn't realise people were joking (you know what some people are like).

Personally I may try to deal with any annoyances by singing this at them ;o

Spread the word about NS Radio:
http://www.readyroom.org/30-2/music/

Once they realise how truly great this community can be, if you look beyond the few rotten and elitist apples, they'll never want to leave!

I think that this is a two-sided sword. Sure, we could try to be nice to all the new players. But to be frank, I expect the same from people who play the game for the first time. If they are willing to learn and play in a team, there is nothing that will prevent the "vets" from being friendly and supportive.

But if you meet new players who think they know it all, ignore good hints and be insultive to players with constructive criticism...then there is no need to be friendly.

It would be nice to have a community guide of what players expect other players to behave like. For example: unwritten rules like "don''t take away the comm from other players without asking only because the first comm gets out and heals a hive" etc. Things like that are not common sense for new players. They see the big yellow arrows around a hive/cc and the !we need a commander! signs and just take the comm unwilling to give back their new aquired "power". If you ask it back they might not want to give it back, because they haven't played enough matches to understand what is polite and what not. The same phenomenon was a problem in the "Empires" mod for source. As soon as a commander left the commandvehicle to build something, a new player would use it to drive around and the team had most likely to loose. Complex games like NS2 have problems with new players only if those are disrespectful to other players. (Maybe players with rookie mode enabled should not be able to take command so they have a chance of learning the game from its basics. And denying 4hours of command won't kill anybody.)

But that leads me to the next point, the rookir mode green label of noobness. Why does NS2 have to label new players as new players? It is like pointing on them and saying "this player might not save your ass when you are attacked" or "all hands abandon ship, noob comm stearing to the cliffs". I would rather have the new players just blend in to the community then stigmatize them from the beginning. Then it would not be a matter of how do "we" treat "new" players, it would be a matter of "is this player nice and do i want to help him?" and "the guy i never met before behaves like a **** and i will not ignore him only because his name is written in green".

In a nutshell: Are the new players friendly, expect me to be very supportive and patient. If not, well...

I am just waiting for some of our pro pub veterans to start telling all the new publings that shade hive first is da best!
But seriously...

We have had too many of these threads...
If people havn't got the message on how to treat new people by now (which some havn't) they never will.
