In the most recent patch I no longer get the small checkerboard boxes on top of the players/buildings. However I still get the full checkboard screen while spawning as a marine, and I also got it one time when the game was going live as the alien. Alt-tabing still solves the problem so this is overall an improvement for me.
I would really like to test the build for the bug, but every time I connect to a game or open a local game, NS2 crashes when the map loading processs has finished. I am out of patience and very angry right now! (Yes, game files are validated and it is still a beta, I know) Now I can't even work at my maps and test them, grrrrrrrrrr³ That makes five bugged builds in a row for me so far!

I get this and I've noticed that when it happens (and you type r_stats in the console) it says i have around 250meg allocated for texture loading but its trying to process 400meg+ worth of textures. Is there anyway to change the allocated load so i can see if that makes a difference?

I have had this issue occur only once in NS2 but I have also seen it in other games eg Skyrim. In my case it appeared to be that I had the video card overclocked too much.
I have an EVGA GTX280 which is factory overclocked and has companion software which allows memory clock, shader clock and voltages to be tweaked, reducing the OC seemed to resolve the issue. I assume it was one of these settings that was the culprit but it could also be that the OC was causing the card to overheat as the card temperatures seemed to be quite high when this occurred and would explain why people are able to play normally for a while before it starts.
It is possible this is what is causing the issue for some of the posters and is another avenue to investigate if you are having a chronic problem with this.
I am experiencing it again after it was 100% fixed in 224. It doesnt come as quickly and I hanv't had the full screened version yet but it is back for sure I have had it a couple times after playing for a while.
Yeah it is back for me as well. First only items like the aliens win/lose (or marines win/lose) is as checkerboard, but later players, and everything else is covered in checkerboards:(.
Normally the bug appears after one or two played games. A few checkerboars here and there and when 1-4 Exos start firing, the game just crashes. But it got worse in the newest build: I joined a server, had immediately checkerboars behind names and a sudden crash after the first contact with marines. It was like the lmg fire were painting the texture over my screen and -> crash!
I find it very disturbing that the beta (-30builds) was running better for me than the actual release version. Together with other NS2 crashes, there is not a single day that this game is running without problems for me. I like NS2, but if this isn't going to get better, I will certainly have to start ignoring it untill I can buy a hypersuper-pc or you fix it. And I lost the motivation to work on custom maps. I can't play them and I still can't even test them on my pc due to several bugs. This does not bode well!

i got a Geforce GT 430 and got the same issues
Core 2 Duo 2.4GHZ
3g ram
Windows 7
I also have a older computer
I use:
Windows Vista
Ati Radeon HD 4800
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.40Ghz
NS 2 ran smoothly before, before the new UI.
Today, upgrading to Win7 and using exactly the same settings as I do on XP, I now get checkerboards even at low :p
Tested back with XP, not an issue. It seems to be related to the newer versions of windows, Vista and 7.

Kinda odd, since I havent been experiencing it since patch 221 or something.
