Yeah I'm having this problem too. My comp meets the majority of the recommended specs and all of the minimum. The game runs smooth with only a lil framerate dropping here or there, but I'll get settled into a game for a long period of time and suddenly I will freeze up or simply crash to desktop. Only once have I needed to force my comp to restart.

After dropping from match after match the past 2 days. I've figured it has something to do with the exo-suits. While my game will suddenly freeze and then crash randomly, I know for sure I'm not going to be playing much longer once the exo-suits start coming out and start firing.

Any other time, I feel like I crash more as an alien than I do as a marine, but that may be because I'm stuck on the alien side more than the marine side, because I have crashed once or twice as a marine already.

I'm a bit worried the game is unplayable for me. I like it a lot! I really do! But I only got to see a match end only a few times, some of those times were because one team couldn't get a commander going and just got stomped.

What should I do? Is it me? I haven't had issues like this in other games... :(

How much RAM Do you have? Are you running 32 or 64-bit OS?

The beta provided many opportunities for optimization for different computers and overcoming many technical difficulties. However, after launch MANY more people are playing with new setups not seen before and may cause a few problems.

Please post in the Technical Support forum, with as many specifics as possible. Including your hardware/software information, and as precise a moment as you can about why you crash.

2.1 ram (Minimum is 2.0) and 32-bit OS

It's not a problem with a exotic type of hardware, it's a new bug in the engine that was introduced in the release build (227), because people, like me, that never crashed during the beta started to crash on the release build.

We just need to wait until they find the problem and fix it.

Seems to affect mainly 32bits 0S, any 64 bits have this specific crash problem?

Yeah, sorry for posting here Turkey. It was the first one that I saw that encouraged me to make a forum account to add to it. My derpy self not thinking that if I had made one prior to it, I would have realized that would open up more forums for me to look into. T_T

I'll do what Yuuki said and just chill a bit and play something else till the patch is released, if I'm still experiencing crashes, then I will post details of ALL the things in the other forum.

As far as I know they are testing a fix for it as we speak and should be released in next 4 hours i think.

    Keep watching @NS2 for updates

I just wanted to say I'm also having this issue, and I run XP 32bit as well. Didn't have any crashing/lockup issues in Beta.

    Spec's:

    x4 3.2 processor
    ATI HD 4600
    3.5 gigs DDR2
    PLENTY of HD space

It seems to happen the most deep into the match, especially when aliens control the majority of the map. It seems to happen more often when I'm commander as well. I'm really wondering if it has something to do with the new infestation, since I tend to drop a TON of cysts everywhere which results in pretty thick gunk everywhere on the map. Just a thought. (Also, I tend to get an error from the flamethrower sound effect loop pretty often right before the crash, according to my tilde screen. Also weird.)

I wonder if this is RAM-related. 32-bit processes can only use 2GB of RAM (be it physical or virtual) on 32-bit Windows. If you have more than 2GB of RAM, you can use more than 2GB total, but only 2GB per process.

    Is Natural-Selection large-address aware? Because even if it's a 32-bit process, a large-address aware 32-bit app can address 2GB on 32-bit systems, and 4GB on 64-bit systems.

That might explain why only 32-bit people seem to have crash-to-desktop issues; if NS2 is a large-address aware 32-bit app, 32-bit users would crash at 2GB of memory usage and 64-bit users would crash at 4GB of memory usage.

You'd think so, but I've been on the same setup since beta build 190, and never CTD, never run out of memory, never have bad performance EVER.. only since Build 227 have I crashed more times in the past day than in the 2 years i've been in beta.

Something in the engine changed in 227 that caused precaching, texture, and whatever method used to store assets into memory changed in 227

    Core2 Duo 2.67
    4Gb Ram
    Win 7 32bit
    8800GTX 1Gb

Well, wouldn't that be exactly it? NS2 didn't previously hit that 2GB limit, but now it does? As in, they changed something and now it requires more RAM than before.

    I just checked NS2.exe. It's a 32-bit large address aware executable. That means it'll have a limit of 2GB on a 32-bit system, and 4GB on a 64-bit system.

Unless we see anybody with a 64-bit CTD, this seems to suggest you're hitting the RAM limit. It'd be interesting to know the RAM usage of the process right before it crashes...

Comforting to know I'm not alone with this issue.

In my case I am playing in fullscreen windowed mode on a 64-bit Windows 7 box:

    Intel i5 750@2.67Ghz
    8GB RAM, 64-Bit Windows 7
ATI Radeon HD 5700 running AMD Catalyst 12.1 Driver, BIOS 11/12/2009

My symptoms manifest as a completely frozen video while I can still hear the game audio.
I'm playing in fullscreen windowed mode @1360x768*

At this point I'll be following my usual advice and upgrading my videocard drivers and card BIOS.
I play a variety of other games like Diablo III, BF3 and EvE without any issues ...

*I'll report back into this post if patching my drivers resolves the issues.

Looks like that was it, the new patch just went live with a few relevant changes:

Fixed issue where the game would run out of memory on 32-bit Windows.

    and

Reduced client and server memory usage by 200-400 MB

Check the bottom of your steam window. If it says 1 item completed, click it to see what has been updated.

Alternatively, run your game and join any official server. If they boot you out it means you have not updated. Restart Steam or your system and wait for a bit :)
