Hello everyone,
My problems with this game are essentially twofold. I love being able to play the game in the rare case that I'm patient enough to actually get into a server, but it seems I spend the vast majority of my time in this game repeating the following cycle of events:
I boot up the game and click play. Usually, I pray to some kind of unnamed higher power at this point that I will actually get a list of servers to refresh for me to look at. I'd say that about 80% of the time, I end up looking at a blank screen in the area that the servers are supposed to pop up. Hitting refresh doesn't fix this problem when the server list doesn't populate on the first try. The only way for me to take another crack at getting a server list is to exit the game and then restart it and click "Play" again; this process repeats over and over and over and over until I finally get a list of servers to look at.
Finally, usually after about 5-10 minutes of exiting/restarting the game to get a server list, I finally get one to look at. Assuming I'm lucky enough to find a server worth joining (where there's a decent amount of people and the server isn't running/pinging poorly), I will move on to the next step: actually trying to join a server. However, I'm only able to actually get into the server about 5-10% of the time. Most times, when I try to join a server, it moves to the "connecting to server" splash screen and shows me that it's "Attempting connection...", where it stays for about 2-3 seconds before kicking me back out to the main menu with a "Couldn't establish connection to server" error. Oh, and upon failing to establish a connection to the server, it wipes the list of servers that I'd just been able to refresh. At this point, I'm back to square one, opening the game, checking for a server list, and rebooting over and over until I finally get one.
Anyone else have a similar problem? Hopefully it's something that can be patched out. Not going to lie, it drives me nuts that I spent money to buy this game and I'm probably going to be the one having to do all the dirty work to make it work on my end.

It did not happen in the alpha/beta builds so maybe the server list server is overloaded?

Use this website to browse/connect to servers until fixed:

Attach or post the contents of the NS2 "log.txt" file, this contains useful error messages for the UWE devs:
To get to the file, press windows key + R, fill in "%appdata%\Natural Selection 2", hit enter.
You can either copy paste it to the forums or post it into a website such as http://www.pastebin.com and post the link here on the forums.

I hope you guys can work this out, I really like this game and would love to play without all the hassle
Supposedly that error is just steam cloud sync issue and is "normal" .. but if any of you wish to tinker with the steam cloud files and settings please do.
Makes me think the logs aren't telling the whole story, though, if it's indeed not the issue.
Would you guys run net_Stats in the console (~ key) while playing and if you notice slowdown press the f12 key to take pictures asap? Might be tricky to pull off but would show whats going on more.
The devs are already investigating udp flooding as an issue, however.
Hmmm..
Need more info, for sure.
Go into steam settings and change this setting to something low like 500?

Anyone else have similar success?
Edit- I re started steam-joined 2 almost full servers without any problems!! Seems like it works then!
Thank you for the help :)
from neilman and myself?
Feel free to open a new thread if these fixes dont help you
The server browser breaks after this happens. Just refreshes, but blank.
edit: Actually, the server browser breaks after I get a "Server Full" error too.
BUT the process of refreshing the server list and/or joining a server still messes up my internet - and i have to reset my connection by putting the cable out and in again, to be able to connect to anything else than NS2 (any browsers like firefox or other games etc.)
Those problems are a constant topic in the steam discussion section too, i hope they ll get fixed soon.
I m on win7 64bit, with a Netgear RP614v4 Router. Any other games worked perfectly - until Chivalry. Chivalry has the exact same server-browser problem. But i didnt expect NS 2 to have it too, because it appears to be well coded and bugfree overall - Chivalry is just a mess. Sad to encounter a severe problem in NS2 like that.
I think it really has something to do with the game and the router BUT it was not like this in the first few days after release... Why now?!?!?!?!

Yeah... I'm now onto day 2 of no NS2.
Ever since yesterday (morning of Nov 5th), my router floods whenever I try to find OR connect to a server.
Changing the steam settings for ping to 500 or any other number did not help at all. I also tried getting into a server through this website -->
http://hypernovadesign.co.uk/nanogrid/
And immediately it says cannot connect, and my internet craps out.
Other games react normally, until I check them again after NS2 messes up my internet. I had no such issues with NS2 for days, I was even playing until midnight on Nov 4th.
I have a Verizon-standard: Westell A90-750015-07 "Modem Router"
Windows Firewall is off. Why would I suddenly be unable to play NS2 the morning after I had played all night?
If they can find a quickfix for this, great. I've searched for many hours, to no avail.
I also plan to wait for a patch fix. It's bad enough having to play with 15 fps, now I can't even do that.
UPDATE:
To any1 with ping skyrocketing in server list...
You're probably trying to download a mod. Unsubscribe from all NS2 mods you may be subscribed to (In the Game Hub).
That's all it took to fix my situation.
((Check your log.txt (In AppData --> NS2) if there's any indication of a mod error. If so, this should be your fix!))

The problem:
- I can not see any servers.
- I can not join any servers.
I have (so far) tried the following:
- Check integrity of game files
- Delete local content and re-install game
- checked <filter_gamemode>
- Software firewall has permit to ns2.exe in all ports
- Router ports forwarded (2700-27100 TCP/UDP, 1200 UDP)
- Tried nanogrid and other web based sites to join
- Tried connecting from console
Have you got another suggestion? I have to say.. I have NEVER had any issues with online games, or other programs that I run. I have yet to try if Half-life servers work, I don't think I will, because this is too much. I paid for a game, I did not pay for play with trial and error. This is pretty ###### up. Clearly the problem is not 100% on your side, because others can play just fine without errors. I think the problem is on my end AND somewhat on steams end. I hope that your reply is not shrugging shoulders with a '###### happens, try something if you can get it to work'.
Please, more suggestions if possible, I will try them. But for now, Im too tired and angry. Well, it's coffee time. A loooooooong cup of coffee.

UWE is working on it, next patch might have a fix:

It did IMPROVE the situation -- I can now get server lists 75% of the time, but there are still frequent occasions where a server list won't pop up.
Also, whether or not I get a server list, my internet connection seems to stop working for any computer on my wifi network when I join a game -- this persists for a few minutes or sometimes longer, even though I can play the game online just fine.
Thanks for everyone's help with this issue.

Error: Attempted to load remote options from a file that does not exist.
I had a fix for this.
Close Steam. Rename Natural Selection 2 folder in steamapps > common
Start Steam. Verifiy content of NS2. Fails saying X number of files need redownload.
Open NS2 from steam library and get game download started.
Close Steam. Copy contents from original folder in step 1 into the new Natural Selection 2 folder created by steam.
Open Steam. Very contents of NS2.
Run game. Connect to server.
This is not working anymore, and I am unable to connect to any servers at all

Well, "empty server list" isnt the only problem.
The problems (for me) are: 1 when joining a server the error "couldnt establish a connection with the server" appears.
2 after that, the server list is empty.
3 the empty list can only be "fixed" by pulling the internet cable out - and put it in again.
Lowering the maxpings/minute setting in steam greatly lowers the chances of 1 and 2 happening (while the servers need more time to show up in the browser) - but nevertheless 1 and 2 still happen from time to time - AND 3 happens at least every second time i hit refresh!
What kind of badly programmed script can actually "disable" the whole internetconnection of a user?
NS2 devs appear to know (at least subconsciously)! :D
