Bad performance no matter the settings, on a more than decent rig.

I've tried every combination of settings I could think of, I haven't seen one frame over 25 fps, and I only got that in the least detailed of the lobbies. Particles are a particular problem and cause everything to tank all the way down to 2-4 fps. I've tried the task priority batch file and all the other tweaks in the thread, nothing's giving me anything. My CPU usage never goes over 33-40%, and the game is only even using 3 of my cores. My GPU usage is constantly at or slightly below 100%, and CPU usage actually goes DOWN the more things appear on screen.

Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
AMD FX-6100 at 4.1ghz (tested at stock clocks, and the game runs worse)
GeForce GTX 470 (tested at stock clocks, also makes it worse)
8GB RAM
7200rpm WD Caviar Black hard drive

I'd love to play this game, since I played a few pretty awesome games on my friend's machine (only slightly better than my rig), but the game is unplayable wherever anything is happening at all.

I used to have a GTX470 with a Q6600 and the game ran pretty OK, but that was alot of builds ago.

As for your current fig, it's AMD, but still 4GHZ...really.

Look at the rig in my signature, and I tell you, I am lucky to hold steady @ 50FPS, even if I turn everything to low.

On a hunch, I checked my BIOS. "CPU Heat Throttle" was enabled, which I made sure to disable ages ago. It came back. I must have messed with it at some point. Anyway, I'm getting decent, playable FPS now. about 25 in heavy combat, but the frequency of that isn't too bad. 50 or 60 when nothing's going on. So, scratch all this.

However, with that rig you should really be getting better fps than that. FPS of 25 is hardly playable.

    Uhmm...

If you disabled the heat throttling on the BIOS then either your temp probe that the BIOS uses is horribly out of whack or your CPU is more or less cooking itself.

I would check the temps on your stuff before doing anything else, including playing another round of NS2, just to be on the safe side.

AMD's have this weird issue where you have to set your thread to high priority in the task manager to get good performance.
Try creatign a text file copied "Start /high NS2.exe" into it and then renamed the file NS2.bat in your NS2 folder.

Monitored my temps closely after turning that off. Never went above 45c.

Edit: Well I made the mistake of alt-tabbing ONCE during a game, and now my FPS is ###### again, no matter how many times I restart the game. Tried the batch file again, still no dice.</b>

Its the infestation. Try joining a custom mod server that removes infestation, such as a NS1 mod which basically uses the ns2 graphics but is meant to be like ns1. With the lack of infestation my FPS went from 15-20 in combat to 50-60. When not in combat I am over 100 fps. This is on a AMD Phenom 9150e OCd to 2ghz , 8gb ddr2, and a radeon HD 6850 1gb.

Try to play alround with the settings on your Graphic card, Maybe there is some setting that does not work well in NS2.
I tried some settings that got me down to 20fps or something really low, I have 100fps+ otherwise

If you have already tried this, Then I have no idea ^^

I was prancing around a ton of infestation before I alt-tabbed, and my framerate was completely fine. It's combat that reduced it a bit, but not to anything THIS bad.

Can you give me some examples? I'm pretty lost in those settings.
