Game locks up with black screen, forcing manual restart

Hi.

I could be playing for as much as 10 minutes or an hour, (more common around 30 minutes of play) but the game will suddenly force a black screen (with some very light artifacts vertically drawn, dependent on colours displayed in game at the point of lockup). I can still hear my friend on Skype and he can here me but I can't do anything in game and the sound loops slightly, can't alt tab or alt+f4 forcing me to hit the power button. I've tried all the AMD drivers from the latest beta to 12.9 and I recently reformatted due to a sound issue, but I still get it after reformat.

My computer right now isn't 100% stable, but I've only ever seen this exact same error when running Batman Arkham City in DX11 mode, which was fixed by forcing DX9 rendering. Running max settings without texture streaming very smoothly at 1920x1200.

<a href="http://pastebin.com/Ur1vYdcE" target="_blank">The log.txt can be accessed here.</a>

<a href="http://pastebin.com/3Qy2uqGB" target="_blank">My dxdiag can be accessed here.</a>

I can try lowering my settings in future to see if that fixes the issue, but I don't get the same sort of error or any severe artifacting/crashing in any other demanding games. I hope you guys can sort this out, as I do adore this game.

Thanks!

    things to check:

    video drivers ( try 12.4, 12.8, or 12.10)
audio drivers ( Realtek seems to have the most crash prone - I just use the default windows ones now)
power supply (might not be providing enough power)

How would you recommend I check my PSU? any good software?

    EDIT:

Nearly an hour and a half solid on 12.8, and the game crashes again with similar scenario. Instead of black with vertical its got lots of fine white vertical stripes with bits of black in them. Couldn't open file and shader errors were the last things in log. I'll try uninstalling Realtek drivers but if that corrupts my sound its probably something more to do with the game.

Sounds like an audio driver issue.. i had the same issue with BF3 using realtek onboard audio.. changing it in bios to use soundcard did the trick. Although I do not have this issue with NS2.
Investigate sound tho if the game is hard crashing with an audio loop..

There is a problem with some soundcards when they want to generate some 'gaming' sound that is not supported by some games.
I had the exact same problem in 'BFBC2' with my 'Asus Xonar Dx' card until i disabled GX 'EAX support' mode that was supposed to be some gaming mode.

The game/soundcard froze the computer and I had an annoying sound that was looping over and over again, Only way to use the computer again was to restart the computer.

Hope you can fix the problem, Otherwise you could consider buying a kickass soundcard like me ^^

Happy to report that after uninstalling the Realtek drivers/sound manager that comes with the motherboard, I was able to play 3 hours+ straight with no crashing. Now I can concentrate on troubleshooting issues with the comp its self, as those drivers/manager were the only way to fix a severe sound issue I had with the rear sound output.

Much appreciate the help everyone. Cheers!

Sorry to bump, but I have yet again experienced another crash exactly the same as described in the OP. Maybe a soundcard is my only option? Preferably not, hopefully something magically comes with the next patch. It seems uninstalling those drivers allowed me to play for a bit longer than I usually could.

I bough a soundcard once to prevent this happening to me, I Actually had this problem twice and the first time I was using the built in soundcard and buying a new soundcard solved the problem, But then I bough a new motherboard and the soundcard did not fit there so I had to buy another soundcard ^^ Got back the same problem but turned of the special game effect on the card and now it works perfect.

My first card was 'Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer' and it worked great,
And now I am using 'Asus Xonar DX' and the sound quality is on a professional level for a small cost.

I have been reading on a lot of forums and Realtek seems to a real killer of games :)
Maybe there is some drivers that might fix the problem or some option somewhere to fix it somehow.
If you google hard enough then you might find some really good tip that might help you?

    Anyway,

A good Sound card will blow your mind if you compare it to a motherboard Sound card,
You can only find yourself in a Win/Win situation if you buy a good card because the sound will be improved alot :)

You can also try to play alround with your Graphic card drivers and see if that helps but it sounds like it is the soundcard,
Turn off things that looks like they can override the game :] who knows, maybe you are lucky hehe

Thank you for your replies Jeehao. I've found that with Ambient occlusion and AA off in game, I don't experience any more crashes. A sound card that improves quality would be neat as I'm a bit of an audiophile. I'll roll with these graphic settings turned off even though I can run the game fine with them on, and hope a patch fixes this issue down the road.

    Again, thanks for your advice!

To be fixed in a patch we must first identify the problem :)
If ao and aa are crashing for you, do you see anything in the log.txt after crashing?

After a good bit of troubleshooting, I thought the latest patch solved the issue so I had a few hour long sessions on it, only till a few minutes ago the game crashes after not even an hour of playtime.

    Error: Couldn't open file ''
    Error: Couldn't open file ''

    and

a LOT of Error: Collision model 'models/marine/advanced_armory/advanced_armory.model' created with zero coords

I'm positive the AA/AO is the cause of the problem. With it turned off I will never crash. Hope that is of some use.
