When the game freezes it utilizes 100% of a cpu core. It seems like the game runs into an infinite loop somewhere in lua5.1.dll:

I also had AppHangB1 but I didn't have VS2010 installed to show disassembly or call stack but I'm guessing it is the same issue that Jeff posted (Not Responding; Wait for the program to respond, close (or debug)).

Yes game freezes, screen turns black, and game seems to rebuild objects on the map.. it's not like turning black and then normal, but it turns black, then game rebuilds all 3d objects (they build in blue form and then game adds textures) in a second or two and then game runs normally again

Thanks Jaakington, thats what I meant, too :)
I don't want to charge the NS2 programmers, cause I know the circumstances in which the game was created (sorry for my bad english). And the game makes to much fun to demand sth from the programmers. I just hope it will be fixed, so that the playerbase wont die.

Thx you for a great game, pls keep working on the bugs and I will love u for that!

Thats so true.. it's not like I would stop playing ns just cause things like this happen. Programmers are people too, and this could just occur due some hardware failure.
Yet I am ready to buy a new computer to play this game cause I loved ns1, and for a little moments this game works, I love it too.
I just hope that this is something fixable :)

Still ready to gather more information if anyone knows a way.

Exactly this happens to me EVERY GAME between minute 15 and 20.
Game freezes, sound goes on like nothing happened, then the game crashes and if I dont reboot my computer before playing again I get like 10-15 fps afterwards (normally I have ~100) in every game.
NS2 royally screws up with some system drivers.
The Task Manager doesn`t show any strain on GPU/RAM/SSD, but if I try to run ANYTHING after the NS2 crash my fps are abysmal.

    System:

    Windows 8 64bit
    I7 860 (2.8 Ghz)
    8Gig Ram
    128GB SSD
    Radeon HD 6870

    Newest drives etc are installed.
I got the same problem on all my systems (2 Win 7, 1 Win 8)

The game is completely unplayable for me this way

I have watched the replay. I couldnt see any freezes, but it seems, that this is related to the way how you recorded the video (with the ns2 console). It doesn't seem like it is a real replay-video, it's more like the engine would recalculate the game you played (you know what I want to say ;)), maybe you need an extern program to record the game, so that you can upload it to youtube. Than the error would be recorded too.

I have the same problems with freezes, as I told, but I didnt mentioned yet, that I had no problems before patch 228.

Is there way to degrade the game patches? I haven't tried any patches before 228 so I can't give any info on that.

I don#t know exactly, but when i was relaesed, there were many players with errors, and 2 or 3 days after relase there was a small patch. in between these 2 or 3 days (from release to the small patch) i had no problems with freezes, i guess it waa build 227, now its 228. but im not sure at all

Any progress on this with the last records ?

    Just happened to me.
Games just freezes ( no black screen ) when I alt-tab out the game is stuck at 25% ( I guess 100% on one of my 4 cores ).
It happens from time to time and a friend reported that it triggered it several times.

I have the same problem, game freeze and sound keep looping (no black screen for me); this happens, curiously in my case, when I'm playing with the Exo suit and I press both mouse buttons firing the dual miniguns.

    Any news on this?

Love this game but It`s kinda sad to have to reboot the Computer every half hour.......

I am having the same issues as well. The game would freeze and I would have to either wait a few seconds or open my task manager for a few seconds for it to go back to normal. I am pretty sure it is not my computer as I am running 3.8ghz i7, 24gb ram, and 280x2 gtx sli so there is plenty of power. The .exe is using about 1.5gb of resources.

    Freezing here as well. I7/GTX570/8GB/SSD

Happens randomly at least once every hour. Complete lockup, can get to task manager to kill the process however. I can be on either team and any creature. Anything else besides recording a demo that we can do to help pin point this down? It is terribly annoying =(

I have reinstalled that dxsetup you mentioned, will post back if lockup still happens, unfortunately probably wont get time to play until Friday.

    Hey guys,

I tried a few things to try and pin point what was causing the random freezes. I am running an 2way SLI so I figured I should test each card separately to make sure it was not my graphic cards bottle necking. The game was running perfectly smooth but I would randomly freeze during the most critical moments. This would occur every 1 minute to 5 minutes and it made it impossible to play.

    1. Tested each graphic card seperately (280 gtx) - still had freezing issues
    2. Reinstalled nvidia latest drivers - still had freezing issues
    3. reinstalled latest directx - still had freezing issues
    4. all my other games did not have any issues like this to it seems to be a ns2 issue

What was there left to do? I gave the nvidia latest beta driver a shot and it fixed it for now! I will do most testing tonight after a few solid hours of gameplay.
    <a href="http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy" target="_blank">http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy</a>

If you are using an nividia cards, try out the latest beta driver. It looks like something was optimized for ns2 sli profile and I am getting better frame rates now as well. Hope it helps.

I need videos of whats occurring for you guys if there is no errors in the log.txt afterwards??
It seems the temporary black screen/rebuilding of the world is not captured in the demo recording tool, but its worth a try for anyone who is having a problem.. but i think since whats happening is not related to NS2 having errors or crashing or anything but rather a display driver issue, it might be best to capture this with with a camera or phone etc..

But if you wish to still attempt to capture it on a demo just in case its not the same issue, feel free:
    <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=124028&st=0&p=2017336&#entry2017336" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...p;#entry2017336</a>

But yea.. definitely need more information that just a description of whats going on, so take videos of it if possible please!

    Wow!
    Ty Jaak!
That's definitely the display driver that has stopped responding, from what i can tell.
Have you seen this happen before in other resource intensive games?
And do you use "texture streaming" in the options??

Do you ever see the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" balloon popup on the system tray/start bar?
    Investigate all these options please:
    <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946</a>

I'd like to see your DXDIAG to ensure ur running the latest drivers etc.
Once you've tried those steps above (and texture streaming) and its still happening and you've provided a dxdiag i will forward this to the devs
    thanks again

Also, it could be 1) overheating 2) overclocking

Please monitor the temps while playing using speed fan, and compare your GPU clocks with GPU-z to ensure they are not over "stock" speeds that the GPU maker, Nvidia or AMD have specified. I.e. your card isn't overclocked by a manufacturer like EVGA or Sapphire etc.. (some manufactured OC'd cards have had issues and underclocking them to appropriate levels have helped)

This hasn't been happening in any other games I've played.
I unchecked the "texture streaming" from options, black screen didn't occur, but it started lagging like hell.. I guess the graphic card is the real problem here.

I haven't seen "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"-balloon ever.
I did format my hard drives and re-install windows just before I started posting here cause I thought that would solve my problem. Then I installed latest ATI catalyst and directX.

My graphic card ain't overclocked and temperature was something like 70 celcius when I once checked it when crash occurred.

I can try to give you the dxdiag if I know where to find it.

See the stickied post about common tech problems by zaggy, instructions are in there for dxdiag.

But I think its safe to say its the video card or driver at this point.
when I see your dxdiag I'm betting the available memory is low on the card if you are experiencing lagging with texture streaming off.. a common cause of the symptoms youre experiencing is the card being overloaded.

You should play with r_stats on and keep an eye on " X ms waiting on GPU" to see if your card is slowing you down .

I think there are two separate issues being presented in this thread. The apparent video card/driver issue and the not respo0nding complete lock up like it is stuck in an infinity loop processing a lua script (lua51.dll)

    Hey all,

I'm having a similar issue to Jaakington. It only started today when I installed a Radeon HD 7750 to replace my very old HD 4670. With the old card the game was running perfectly, but I am now getting constant crashes like the ones seen in Jaak's Youtube clip. Mine are much more frequent, every 10 seconds to every minute. I have tried multiple sets of drivers, from the ones supplied with the card (12.8), the current stable drivers (12.10) and the latest beta drivers (12.11 beta 7). All have the same issue. The crashes occur regardless of the graphical detail set in game, ie it will crash when set to 640x480, everything low. I have kept GPU-Z open to monitor the card; the temp sits around 35-40c, and the GPU load sits around 85-90 even when just in the menu on the lowest graphical settings. I don't have any really recent intense games to test the card on , but if its worth anything it runs fine in both CSGO and Civ5 with all settings high. I have also run 3DMark 11 and Furmark multiple times without issue. I have tried all the steps in sticky besides redownloading the game files due to my restrictive internet cap(internet here sucks). Also I am getting the bubble ironhorse mentioned about my driver stopping. This is also creating entries in my event log letting me know the driver stopped but was able to start again. I also sometimes get a hard crash where I have to reset the machine.

<a href="http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=bxF6Kzku" target="_blank">Here</a> is my dxdiag . Tomorrow I'm going to try and put back my old card and see if everything works, and will also try and take a video of the crashing. I'm pretty stumped as to what else I can do tbh

I think there are three issues in this thread:

    1. graphics card freeze
    2. lua freeze / 100% cpu (which seems like a recursion issue, or stack stomp)
    3. black screen/block rebuild

I personally see #2 after about 20-30 minutes, nearly every time I played, as many of the other responses on build 228.

On build 229, I haven't seen this issue yet *knock on wood*, it may still be there, but harder to replicate.

I also have a radeon card, but this could be coincidence since it's near 50/50 radeon/nvidia.

for #2 i seen it intermittently at best but it usually took about 20+ minutes before it'd occur. This was in build 228 and I have also not encountered the issue in 229 yet.

Cool. okay well since those screens provided enough info on the crashes and its yet to be reported in 229 lets keep this thread to #1 and #3, which I suspect are either linked or the same thing.

@tamati did you try the links I provided, and have you tried texture streaming off and on?
