How big of a map do you plan to make? I don't know of any limitations. But you would have to make your map an absolutely ludicrous size to see any problems I'm guessing.
Not sure about limits but you do have to take into account that giant maps will require better hardware. Also minimaps aren't of the best quality as is, so making them even smaller by making the map bigger presents another issue altogether.
I'm guessing that the greatest "limitation" will not be in how big the map is per se, but how many structures one can fit into it. If you make the map too big, simply placing typical cyst chains main cause in game lag.
I just wanted a good idea of what I would be working with, because when I tried making a map with Hammer (source), I ran into several walls because it could not handle what I wanted to put in to the map.
As long if you don't try to create a Fallout 3 / The Elder Scrolls environment you should be fine. Anything out of standard range, including that which you can hide behind walls, will not be rendered. So if you close your rooms up a lot more players will be able to play your map without any major drops in FPS. By my calculations, you should be able to create a map over 32,400,000,000,000 square inches, apparently, an average map found in NS2 should be somewhere around 900,000,000 square inches. So you have a lot of room to go on. By the way, I <u>refuse</u> to convert <a href="http://i.imgur.com/c0VrM.jpg" target="_blank">this arbitrary measurement into something logically comprehensible</a>.
Edit: I only broke the source engine when I created a triggered environmental lighting. Holy FPS drop from 150 to 1. From that, I have learned, not to try to flash my entire map ever again.

What are the limitations of the spark editor? What problems will I run into if I make the level too big?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Maximum render distance of entities is ~45 meters, the engine is optimized for indoor scenes
If you have entities that are more then <strike>40.000</strike> 32.000 units (I think it is around that value) from the origin of the map (X:0 Y:0 Z:0), they will get deleted from the game. Because the game will see them as "out of bounds"
Off topic: sorry about the simi double post, other one was in the general sections and I posted in the correct section before I saw that this one had been moved.
