FPS Drops

Read your performance thread. Neither worked for me.

Problem
i'll be playing NS2 and at random times doing different things my game will freeze up for a couple of seconds. Can be mid battle, can be respawning, can be about to build.

I get 60-90 FPS generally

Swapping during gameplay? I.e. does the hard drive go active with reading/writing whenever you get those freeze-ups?

hey Snaga. How do i monitor/check this for you?

What is your "Power Management mode" on your Nvidia 3d settings? If it's set to adaptive change it to maximum performance. I've had this happen on a different game and on a different card but it did fix it.

I don't know of the top of my head how you would monitor it (there are ways), but if you have a mechanical HDD you can just listen to it. :) If it starts to crunch every time you get freezes, that might be the reason. Swapping means the game runs out of memory and has to keep some data on the hard drive, which is a LOT slower than RAM. Does the game actually FREEZE completely or does it drop to very low fps, like less than 5?

I know you didn't ask about this, but you should seriously consider upgrading to Windows 7 or any 64-bit OS at the very least. :)

32-bit OS means you can use a total of 4GB of RAM and that includes the RAM on your GPU. The OS and various systems (audio etc.) also probably hog another 1GB, so that leaves only 2GB for the game.

i've considered changing operating systems yes. I don't know how to explain it I thought it was an FPS drop, but i literally can't move or do anything while it's happening so i'd say it's mot like a spike/freeze

i do not have the power management mode setting. And i've checked nvidia website to see where this setting is. It's the only thing missing from the list
