Performance issues FX8120 3.1GHz

Why why why?
Why on earth should I have to turn the gfx on my PC to zero, just so I can see what I'm doing? FPS of 50? Then I see one enemy and it drops to 30. And it's choppy at best, I can't hit anything! Then end game I get a frame every 2 seconds. Running the game in a window is just silly with some tiny resolution. My pc specs are:

- AMD 8 Core FX8120 3.1GHz
- 8GB RAM + 2TB HDD
- DVD Writer
- AMD 7770 1GB
- Windows 7 Home Premium

I'm just ranting as this has annoyed me something awful! (I can run crysis2 no problem) I'm not the only one that's for sure. Think I'm gonna play NS1 untill this is sorted lol.

Have you tried turning ambient occlusion down or off?

Also try lowering your resolution before other settings, it makes a huge difference. Yes it's less than ideal, the performance is still the top priority of the devs.

I've turned everything off. My point was why should I have to? Just feels like I've paid for something that doesn't work.

i think the dvd writer is the problem :D

nah, seriously though - 7770 is a very cheap card these days, so you can't expect great performance in every game.

i would suggest downloading 'realtemp' free prog and running it just to test your cpu temp. it's a relatively easy process and will instantly tell you whether the problem is graphics card or cpu (from what i've heard, at over 70-80C your cpu will throttle back - this is very common if your heatsink/fan is clogged with dust).

There are performance issues for some people. They are working on performance. Yada yada. Look what spark engine has that others don't. Some cool stuff.

Your specs actually aren't that good believe it or not. What resolution are you running the game at?

Lol yeah DVD, Copy and paste is a ######!

My desktop is running at 1920x1080 as I have a 22 inch TV not a monitor (HDMI input). I've tried turning it down all the way to 800x600 and it's still not much better lol. Just been playing as com with everything on full and seems to work alright, I think I'd rather run around getting killed due to poor fps than play a game that looks like crap. It's not the 90s anymore! :D

Core speed is holding you back, 8cores doesnt mean ###### to a game like NS2. Radeon 7770 is more then enough GPU to handle the game.

Not much is going to change until they move some of the game code out of lua.

Try hitting the console, type in 'r_stats' and see the time spent waiting for the GPU. If it's > 0, then your GPU is the problem. There is another stat in there checking the time spent waiting for the thread, if > 0 then your CPU is the problem.

I run a measly HD 4850 (512mb), overclocked Q6600 (3.2ghz), 4gb 1066mhz ram and I turn all the graphics crap off (except multi-core rendering), 1280x800 res. It's enough to play the game and enjoy some of the visuals, but it could be a hell of a lot prettier.

What I really want is to turn the Infestation OFF or at least make it non-dynamic anymore. All I can set it to is 'minimal' and even that still kills some frame rates for me.

NS2 is a CPU hungry game. If you want to max out the graphics and still get good framerate, then you'll need to OC that CPU.

Its your CPU. NS2 is very poorly optimized at the moment and that 3.1 GHz clockspeed simply does not cut it in lategame situations. I have a 7770 as well (though OC'ed quite a bit) and it handles the game fairly well.
Either use the r_stats 1 command in console or install MSI Afterburner to know for sure.

I have to agree that the NS2 performance is not okay. Considering UWE's advise on recommended specs, you can see they outright lied and will have to work quite a bit to right that wrong. Also why the ###### run the game logic through LUA? I would rather have a well-performing game than an easily mod-able one.

    I use an 8150 @ 4.07 ghtz, and 8gb kingston HyperX RAM @ 1499 mhtz. About a 10% overclock for both ram and processor. I get a wait time of 5 sometimes 10ms in r_stats because i use a crappy gtx 460.
But i run 1600x1200 with high textures and average 30+ fps even endgame.

Not true, even NS2 staff will tell you the game is designed to use up to 8 cores. I personally disabled 4 cores and OC'd to 4.4 ghtz instead of 4 and got a performance DROP because my overall clock speed went down from 32ghtz to 17.6.

OP, try formatting since a number of these issues seem to rely heavily on windows. 99% of the people with these issues have largely varying hardware, it's not a hardware issue. Chances are that it's a bad driver or you've got too much damage to windows resulting in generic slowdown and/or corruption.

Then again, like someone said, you should check and see if all windows updates are installed. There are quite a few OPTIONAL COMPATIBILITY updates that you might have missed, which could be affecting your performance.

It's not his system, it's the game lol.

I know everyone is trying to be helpful but let's face the facts, the minimum required GPU is an X800 and he's how many generations ahead of that? No one has the right to tell almost any of these people their systems just aren't good enough with those system requirements being posted.

Personally I'm running C2D @ 3.8ghz with an AMD 5850 (lowesting settings) and 1080p is unplayable, 1600x900 helps a bit but can still dip to 20fps or lower.

The thing with the engine is... its for a shooter right? And performance issues are also causing alot of hit detection issues and that just makes for an entirely unplayable shooter.

I get the idea of wanting Lua mods... but its not working out very well :|

No offense man, but a C2D isnt exactly fast hardware.. infact its listed as a minimum requirement just to be able to run the game.

Current CPUs are over 5 times as fast as Core2 Duos.. And that 5850 is more than 7 times slower than modern GPUs.... Just saying that a lot has changed since those days, and perhaps the minimum requirements should be upped for this game.
  • Star_HunterStar_Hunter Join Date: 2005-01-08 Member: 33818Members, Constellation
On a per core basis the current CPUs are only maybe 40-70% faster than a core 2, and they only overclock a little bit more (4.5GHz). I would say a Gtx 680 for example is only a little more than twice as fast as a 5850 (can vary with game). So to say 5 and 7 times faster would be exaggerating.
  • purephoenixpurephoenix Join Date: 2012-11-17 Member: 172074Members
I wouldn't, you're forgetting features that greatly enhance performance like SSE 4/4.2, DirectX 11 support and Physx support.

C2D's and the 5xxx series are still mid-tier hardware by today's standards and would be expected to become less capable of running newer games.

Your knowledge of hardware is laughable. Also Core 2 Duo is listed as the RECOMMENDED processor, and at 800mhz less then what mine is clocked at. 5850 is 7 times slower? lol have you ever even seen a performance chart of modern GPUs? This is a DX11 SM5.0 GPU and supports all the latest standards.

And that is all besides the point, IronHorse I must say you telling everyone with perfectly adequate systems that it's their systems fault is complete bs and you should be ashamed as a mod. My system more then meets the recommended requirements for this game, and I've seen you post the same bull to people with Radeon 7000 series and Quad Core CPUs.

Must I remind everyone what the system requirements for this game are? If I keep reading this crap on here I have half a mind to make a new thread reminding everyone exactly what the system requirements are supposed to be for this game.

    I'll give you a hint, it's doesn't involve a GTX 680 or a Core i7.
  • purephoenixpurephoenix Join Date: 2012-11-17 Member: 172074Members
How is that relevant? The CPU is so outdated it's missing 3 massively-increasing performance features.
C2D is not good enough, period.

I think you're getting confused with who's knowledge of hardware is sub-par. Nobody in their right mind should be expecting a dual-core to run any DirectX 11 game.
