Otherwise, leap does a straight 16 damage. It's major use is closing the distance between you and your enemy, or fleeing, OR for easy access to ceilings or other places. It's a mobility weapon, and in many games, mobility is king.
Therefore the way to do the most damage is to leap in the same direction as the marine is moving or better attack a stationary one. There is no cap on damage, its the number of 'touches' (in HL engine terms) x 4, there is no max or straight damage it does. Without testing I can't gave an 'average' amount of damage, but from using it i'd guess in the 25 - 40 range.
For getting around its great, and you can change direction in mid-leap. Just point in a different direction and press fire again. In theory it should be great for hit and runs, just leap in and out, but i've never used it like that so i'm not sure how effective it is.
A single leap followed by a bite will kill marines most of the time.
i had someone leap at me and only make a split second contact and i took four total damage to hp (i didn't bother with armor calculations because i didn't want the hassle).
I had him do a longer leap (while i was stationary, so it was about .5 seconds of contact) and i took around 20 damage to hp.
i then had him stand on my head so that his entire leap was touching me. my health dropped like a rock and i died about a second and a half later
yep, it works like charge, hehe. A leap from above on an unsuspecting marine is a guaranteed kill.
