Not everybody will see it the way I (and many players I played NS1 with) see it.
I'm an Onos and just devoured somebody? MUAHAHAHAHA! Run away and let him die! Ample opportunities to shout, "catch me if you can", and "get in mah belly"!
An Onos just devoured me? Become the damsel in distress! "Oh no! I have been eaten! Save me, save me! What are you doing? Chase him down! CHASE HIM! SAVE ME! NOOOOOOOO, I am teh dead."<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well said Timarius. I just watched this nice <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOdKYWJVDDE" target="_blank">Onos tutorial</a> and confirmed no where in there did he mention devour which made me very sad. That said the in-game tutorials are missing an Onos one, I assume because devour hasn't been added yet, but it would be nice to have one.
But in all seriousness why I think devour should be added:
1) I still remember the first time I was eaten in NS1 as marine, it was just holy ######, what is happening, this is the coolest looking thing ever. The inside of the Onos belly just looked so amazing it really took me back.
2) 1v1 an Onos is going to win, whether it be by stomach or the horn, and which way is more satisfying to both players? You're hungry and I want to see what you ate.
3) The potential for teamates to save you as Timarius said was just so great. Hearing the muffled gunshots from the belly and hoping to pop out alive. Yes you're out play for a little while, dying you're out play too, but the times you get saved are so awesome.
4) Added skill / strategy to the game. Devouring was never very easy to do. You had to aim just right, (remember aim for the legs?) it had a longer cooldown on the attack, and left you semi vulnerable when you missed it. But with that difficulty came reward. Keep it a precise ability to pull off, unable to be spammed. Eat a high priority target? He may come back alive if his marine buddies are around. In an all in fray gouging with the horn can be a better option.
5) I read somewhere that eating exo suites would be a problem. Just make it so you can't devour exo suites. They look a little too big to eat anyway. Seems like a job for the horn.
Bring back the love. Onos loves to eat.

I still remember all my times being devoured
"Tralala i just got an heavy and hmg, let's try and go around this corn.."
CHOMP=>run away fro the rest of the marines
"FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU... Oh well, time to get a drink while i die"
Definitly not what i'd call fun.
To each his own i guess,i'm personally really,REALLY glad to see it gone forever.
And tbh,i dont see it adding anything to the game,it will just end in
1)The devoured guy sitting doing nothing for an awfull long time (by game standards)
2)Onos just camping corners and fleeing as soon as they get someone. Not exactly an highly dinamic gameplay
As for being devoured for up to a minute, it never took that long. What was it, 10 seconds if that? I think we'll survive being digested for 10 seconds. In that time we can admire the Onos insides and think about how we got in this mess.
If you make the devour time short, the chance to kill the onos and free the guy becomes smaller and smaller => you get nearer and nearer to a no-counter situation
If you make it too long...It just gets boring for both (you have to wait for the onos to actually kill you / you have to stay out of combat long enough)
I see just problems in bringing it back.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Back in the day if you were a heavy HMG walking around where an onos could devour you and get away you most of the time did something wrong. You had to stay with your team and it forced some nice teamwork and really moving together as a unit.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
It was still plenty possible to hit&run with devour
A little gore would be fun to see weeeeeeeeeee!
longer than 30 seconds, then unless I wanted a drink break,
dunny break or was really really committed to the team,
chances are I would F4 whilst still in the throat.
I hate games with long respawn!

You guys would just love to play aliens with one sneaky ###### killing all of your eggs!
Or on a high population server!
LOVE IT!
But you guys never play aliens because of those 12 second respawns, huh?
Of course, I'm not bitter about being one shot by a shotgun, forced to sit in a queue for 12 seconds, often put back off because there's no egg for me to spawn at. Granted, that's more on the shotgun being completely unfair.
I will never be okay with this mentality that it's unfair for a marine to be one shot, but it's TOTALLY OKAY for it to happen to aliens.
When egg killing is going on, I try to spec someone who is closer to a hive with out the marine egg killing to avoid the egg death problem.
If I can't spawn 3 times in a row chances are the match is fubar and you might as well F4 or find another server.
I'd have to say it's quite rare, and even then it does not take minutes to spawn like the old devour is suggested to have in this thread:
<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t123410.html" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/lo...hp/t123410.html</a>
Like I said earlier, I would put up with up to 30 seconds of staring at onos stomach, any more and it would be F4 for me.
I have limited time to game each day so I don't want to spend it staring at a respawn in bla seconds screen or the inside of an onos.
If I had to do that regularly, I would find another game to play!
Devour was difficult at first because it wasn't immediately clear where you should aim, thus resulting in a situation like you're describing.
But once you got used to it and learnt where to aim, it wasn't all that hard to pull off pretty consistently. Even jetpackers could get devoured with relative ease
They could just add a flag in the server config.
then again cant someone code it into the game and just be a mod ?
