Attempted troubleshooting so far: Disconnected and reconnected to my network, rebooted, letting the server list work for 5+ minutes with no filters.
No servers are showing up. Is the address server for Europe down? I was playing fine just an hour ago.

Nice, thanks. That site seems a bit poorly designed though, really destroying Opera. (25% CPU use on my quad i5-3570K @ 5.1 Ghz and very harsh slow down) But I guess that is par for the course for amateur websites without several developers. It'll do for now!
Edit: yeah, this site is just not helpful, it takes 2-3 minutes to sort the list and another 2 minutes to launch. The 25% load and complete slowdown shows it's only loading one core, woefully made really.

Having the exact issue. Tried the "create local server first" fix but is stalls at "authenticating..."
Uninstalled from steam and am re-downloading but by the looks of things if its effecting a good many people it maybe some kind of steam/uw side issue.
You can also use this:
<a href="http://www.play4dead.com/ns2/" target="_blank">http://www.play4dead.com/ns2/</a>
It's a bit simpler in terms of design but does the job just as well.
click the 1000 servers, xxx players online at the top.
This is BS!
Even if the master list is down direct connections will and should remain unaffected.
is it only down in certain regions? if it's global i can't imagine servers being too full, and from my experience low pop servers = aliens win
No NS2 tonight it looks like :(

In <drive>\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<userid>\4920\remote\options.xml, make sure <filter_gamemode>asdfasd</filter_gamemode> is <filter_gamemode></filter_gamemode>.
...... small information hide in <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com</a>
it works now :)
