so i would like to setup a server so me and 3 other friends can play together privatly. i tried useing the ingame create server but when my friends try to connect to me when i send them an invite through steam friends they get an error saying the server is not responding.what am i doing wrong? i tried doing the dedicated server thing as well followed the video tutorial part 1 but when i launched the server and invited friends to it they got the same error.i do note that in the server selection i can see my own server and in the name it has (LAN) tags so im assuming the server i created is only on my lan network? please help im stressed about this and just wanna play privatly with friends...

You have to make that ports 27015 and 27016 are open for people to join your server. Easiest way to do that is to follow the instructions here: <a href="http://portforward.com/routers.htm" target="_blank">http://portforward.com/routers.htm</a>
    - Select your Router
    - Choose the Steam Client instructions (just substitute ports 27015 and 27016 for the ones they suggest)

You can then check to see if the ports are open from here: <a href="http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/" target="_blank">http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/</a>

Mind posting what router and modem you have? There could be a couple of things going on
    - The port might be open, but the website says its not (sometimes this happens, see if your friend can join now)
    - Your router's port forwarding either doesn't work or needs something else enabled (sometimes setting up virtual servers instead of port forwarding, or, as a last resort, putting your computer in the routers DMZ, is required)
    - Your modem might have a built-in firewall (googling to determine if the modem is the problem can be helpful)

I'd suggest trying to plug your computer directly in the modem to see if that's the problem as a good first step.
