Also came across <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=124336" target="_blank">this thread</a> with a similar issue, however I don't have anything running that uses graphics overlay.

<b>Issue</b>
Game (via Steam) is not starting.
What I get is a black screen for a few seconds, anticipating to see the UWE logo and whatnot, but it goes straight back to desktop as if I'd quit the game (Steam even starts displaying its deals then, so the process apparently gets terminated correctly). I've had this issue ever since release - I had no such problem during Alpha and Beta, however that was on a different machine as well.

<b>What I've tried</b>
It's been a few weeks since I tried fixing this with the help of some (older) threads around here, so memory is a bit blurry. Things I tried include:
- validating game files via Steam
- selectively deleting certain game folders like "shaders" and re-downloading them
- complete reinstall of the game
All to no avail.

<b>Issue</b>
Game (via Steam) is not starting.
What I get is a black screen for a few seconds, anticipating to see the UWE logo and whatnot, but it goes straight back to desktop as if I'd quit the game (Steam even starts displaying its deals then, so the process apparently gets terminated correctly). I've had this issue ever since release - I had no such problem during Alpha and Beta, however that was on a different machine as well.

<b>What I've tried</b>
It's been a few weeks since I tried fixing this with the help of some (older) threads around here, so memory is a bit blurry. Things I tried include:
- validating game files via Steam
- selectively deleting certain game folders like "shaders" and re-downloading them
- complete reinstall of the game
All to no avail.

Also have you ever been able to get it to work on that machine?
Also since it's windows 7 you can try to run both Steam and whatever the NS2.exe is in administrator mode
I'd actually try that last one first. . . I had to do that for a few games already

No. All I get is a black screen for about 4 seconds, then back to desktop with the NS2 process shut down as if I'd quit the game.

DX is version 11, Nvidia driver is the latest 310.64 - that one is actually a beta driver, which I use because it's supposed to be optimized for Planetside 2.

True, me too. That didn't do the trick here either tho.
Also have you right clicked the NS2 in Steam gone to properties and checked the Set Launch Options to ensure there is no weird launch options?
Nothing in there - shouldn't, since it's a fresh install anyway.
As for deleting the appdata folder, I'm a bit confused where that's located - search doesn't find any in my whole Steam folder. Unless you mean the whole NS2 folder under Steam/Steamapps/common/ - which would amount to a complete delete&reinstall, which I've already tried.
I've finally got it. A software that came with my graphics card, Gigabyte OC Guru II, apparently interfered with NS2 - not only that, but also with the Blizzard Launcher, keeping me from updating SC2. No other games or applications were affected, tho. Close (or remove -.- ) that tool, and it works.
Jeez.
* check your windows event viewer. (eventvwr) A lot of the times a application crashes, it shows which thing was somewhat responsible.
* if a application crashes there is a small chance it writes a dmp file in your profiles directory containing info on the why.
