Hey there,

i just gota awesome problem with the NS2 Game and it is that i do not get good FPS to play with.

AMD FX6300
Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 OC
4GB Kingston HyperX 1866 DDR3
Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 Rev 1.1

Windows XP HP 32B

Mostly like i get about 30 fps infight if more players then 2 are on screen maybe 20 ... its justa bit unplayable for me at the moment and i wonder why is that.

The Task-Manager just gots a 50% core usuage on 3 cores and seems to be bored.

Also Far Cry 3 is running on DirectX9/Ultra Settings with over 60 FPS stable and my actual resolution is 1280x1024 - so i really wonder why i leak FPS in NS2.

I suspect that the AMD Leaks support for the Windows XP, gota try Win7 Prof soon but maybe some1 else got a solution for me?

A friend is using a 6950 and still get over 60 fps mostly like 120 :/

Here just 2 Screenshots one with Maxed out Settings:

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img607/4188/fpshighsettings.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

And one with Lowsettings:

<img src="http://imageshack.us/a/img507/7615/fpslowsettings.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

There wasnt a single player on screen or server - really horrible frames at all.

Open the Catalyst Control Center > Gaming > 3D App Settings

    Smoothvision - Use App Settings
    Catalyst AI - Disable (checked)
    Mipmap - Quality
Wait for vertical refresh - Off, unless app specifies
    Adaptive AA - Off (unchecked)
    OpenGL Setings - Unchecked

And turn texture streaming off in NS2 options.

I've the same CPU and the "deluxe" version of that motherboard and do not get that bad of a performance. I'm, however, running a GTX 560 and Win7 64. For me, normal FPS is around 50-70 and dips to 40 or high 30's during the spammy endgame.

Note that there are patches for the AMD FX series for Win7 that improves scheduling with these architectures. I think that the limiting factor for you may be WinXP. Since your GPU is supposed to outperform mine, that would be a safe assumption (as long as drivers aren't the issue).

Win XP won't be doing you any favors with your hardware. The 7000 series Radeon absolutely needs the latest drivers, and your AMD CPU's architecture would be better handled by Win 7 or even 8. I believe you would get better CPU and GPU performance in all cases with a newer OS and drivers.

That being said the performance difference probably won't be that huge, 20FPS in fire fights is normal for many systems atm.

Alright guys my problem is already solved since yesterday. Ive installed Win7 prof 64 bit and nearly all drivers, also the newest 12.11 beta - but i heard about an short hotfix or something today/yesterday - so it may sticks together or not, but finaly in real heavy fights i stay over 40 fps and at all its an average of about ~55 @ 18 players.

The performance of most games increased with the upgrade to win 7/AMD GPU Drivers and now NS2 is running with low infection but everything else high/max fine.

Now its playable for me ;) thanks alot for the attention

If you keep particles at LOW your FPS should be even more stable in heavy combat.

Great news! Your hardware was screaming for a newer OS to take advantage of it and you listened, happy gaming.

Jeah true, but i already knew that the OS hurt the system already as ive seen that AMD stopped support with 12.8 while the most important updates are included after.
But the FPS were running good on other games - NS2 was just the first running that way badly

Alright after proving performance for many days im back and some others with older cards (6950) do not get fps dropped that way hard i do. its more fun since ive installed the newest 12.11 beta driver of AMD (and changed OS to win7) but if i hear some others with older cards and processors im still a bit disappointed about my own performance ingame.

in situations where I can get a few frames per second (4 Exos - 30-40fps/25minutes) my friend with a phenom 2 x4 (4x3,2) and 6950 has a much higher performance (50+) then me in same situation on high details with the same 1680x1050 resolution atm and even while im running most lowdetails for best performance o_O.

Im just wondering why is that - just changed my screen at all for widescreen advantage but that resolution do not hurt in other games since i bought my new comp (specs above).

so i think the new Gigabyte 7870 GHZ OC may leaks support by game?

(sorry for that bad english ^_^)
