game crash

JanjuksJanjuks Join Date: 2012-12-25 Member: 176219Members
My game has crashed several times with the crash dialog, where I can submit it.
What I just noticed is that many of these times it happened right after some time I had bought dual exo. I don't know why, but it just happens more often when playing by exo. Thought I would give you a heads up.

Also this has happened for me two times. Game restarting solves the problem.

I hope this is the right place where I should write this.

Is texture streaming on? If yes, that's your problem.

    qft, had this problem myself.

    disabling that fixed it, confirmed.

If you use a graphic card with less RAM than the textures needs, there seem to occur the errors you see in the screenshot. A buddy of mine has an old ati graphic card and get regularly crashs when being in or near an Exo for to long. He has texture streaming off but this didn't fixed it.

    well..

you have some out of date drivers 9.18.13.1090 is the latest video driver , but more interesting is that your display driver shows it's not signed, are you using custom drivers?

4 gigs of system memory isn't horrible, but being that memory is almost dirt cheap couldn't hurt to bump that up and give you some headroom..

Wouldn't hurt to even run a windows memory test to make sure your older hardware isn't coming to the end of it's life span.. This the only game your having issues with?

How does that system run? The CPU clock speed is decent, the GTS250 seems a little underpowered though... like, you shouldn't be getting over 30fps kind of under powered...

I have all the graphic options to minimum, except for resolution, so I guess, texture streaming is off.
I am using official Nvidia drivers, which I updated to the latest version a moment ago.
I don't think that RAM is the problem, as I had it replaced this summer, because of new motherboard.
Fps, of course, is low, but I can play.

What I understood from you guys, is that my GPU is too weak for this game. And that both of these problems are connected.

That's not a proper long-term "solution" to this problem. I don't even know if that is the problem, not even willing to test. I'd rather have the game crash than have to wait 2 minutes for every map load.

I have the same problems with exo's. Anytime there are several exo's shooting, I tend to crash alot.

Sorry, but this is plainly ridiculous. I get the same issue after playing a few rounds with texture streaming in succession without switching the server. Usually after 3-5 different maps. I have a 3.3 GB RAM available for the game (though realistically only 2 GB application memory) and 1 GB VRAM (realistically, those are mirrored in system memory since the game is not using DX10+ or running on a 64 bit OS, so it takes another 1 GB away from the application's memory for textures) in my graphic card and run the game on the lowest texture resolution available, making it look pretty ugly. And it still happens reliably after some time.
The next stage after getting this issue on the UI is that it will also appear as texture for the infestation. It always happens in the same order: first UI background, then any stuff that renders text or icons on objects in the 3D world, like nameplates, and last but not least a full coverage of checkerboard infestation before the game finally crashes.

It's not an issue with the available memory (I can play games that are way more memory-demanding at proper texture resolutions) but rather a problem with the texture streaming technology not properly freeing stuff up that it loaded into memory when it changes the map. Sooner or later it's just allocating so much without freeing it that we get these issues, it seems. Going back to the main menu from time to time prevents the issue, but it can't be a longterm solution.

Such memory problems also occur with disabled texture streaming, but it takes way longer to happen and doesn't have these slowly crawling side-effects that tell you that a crash is imminent soon.

With enabled texture streaming, I am also very prone to just have the game crash when I move my camera as commander via the minimap to a different spot of the map where marines are shooting at something. The game then probably doesn't manage to load all required data instantly within that frame and just locks up. Or it's that sound stuttering bug. It's disturbing how often I actually got forced out of command this way in a match that my team was actually winning.
