I know this isn't NS related, but thats why I put it in off topic, I was just hoping someone could help me out.

I bought the game Battlefield 1942 and installed it, and when I try to load anything such as an internet game or single player missions, it begins to load and crashes to the desktop, with a small black box in the upper right corner which soon disappears. I first thought that this was because I had disk 2 instead of disk one, but that didn't help. I then went to patch it to 1.2, but with the exact same results. I reinstalled, but nothing changed. I also visitted the forums for BF1942, and it appears I am not the only one having this problem http://boards.ea.com/messages?13@122.LbaMa...KIV2.0@.ef585b3 If you could help me out, it would really make my Christmas more jolly.
Thanks in advance.

I also had this problem. I fixed it by installing the nt version of directx, instead of relying on the XP Home directx. This also fixed about 4 other games for me.

I downloaded directx 9.0, uninstalled BF1942, deleted everything that has to do with BF1942, then reinstalled, and re-patched it with no better results, I can't believe EA would sell a game with this many problems...

(This should fix probs with the nv refresh tool)

[EDIT] Made a big mistake, thought you meant on startup. Try going to your Sound menu and disable music

i also bought the game..... try lowering th htz in the sound menu and putting the sound quality to low.... for some reason this greatly improved the gameplay and fps on my system. also lower the grafics quality and effects quakity to med or below and the distance draw to about 80%

on my system the game still runs a little slow in firefights in a 64 person server with my settings toned down. (40-50 fps in game, 20-30 fps in firefight)

2.0gig P4 proccessor
80gig Hd
264mb DDRam
128mb geforce 4
WinXP
Integrated sound card
(which may explain why the sound wuality increased performance for me but try it anyhoo)

edit-

when you do get the game running try this tactic...

go engineer and throw a buch of tnt in a jeep, then drive the jeep straight into the enemy base and leap out. then explode the dynamite and laugh at the success of your suicide run.
