Call for System Specs: If 239 fixed your FPS issues

SteveRockSteveRock Join Date: 2012-10-01 Member: 161215Members, NS2 Developer, Subnautica Developer
Hey guys,
We made a change in Build 239 that seems to have fixed FPS issues for a lot of people, introduced around 237. To help us better understand why this happened, could everyone that experienced this (ie. it got way worse around 237, then got way better in 239) post your system specs as a reply, or email steve@unknownworlds.com directly? The easiest way to do this is via dxdiag, instructions here under "How to do a DXDIAG?" : http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/111496/trouble-shooting/p1

Thanks much! We're doing our best to address FPS issues with our limited resources, and this should help us better understand what's going on.

Had worse FPS in Build 238 not in 237 but the performance in 239 is the same like 236/237 specs in signature

The first performance decrease I saw was in 236/237. This was not nearly as big as the 238 decrease but it was still irritating. My frames in 238 literally tanked. The 239 patch fixed the issues introduced by 238 and brought it back to the 236/237 levels. But the sweet spot for me was always 235. 236 also messed up the infestation which is blocky when you have set it on low. Anyways those are just my experiences I tend to keep an eye on my framerate a lot.

Is there anyway I can revert to a 235 build to test it out?

    My specs are i7 920 @ 4.2 ghz and a Gtx 480 Oc'd

    Ill be emailing my dxdiag.

    i5 3570 @ 4.4ghz, 8gb ddr3 1600, 256gb samsung 830, amd 7950.

running at 2560x1440. saw drop in 238. dropped frames make clutch lerking more difficult. alternating between spikes and biting can cause one or the other to not trigger due to low frames (i think?)

is 239 out or in testing?

Add me to the list of those who got a performance hit with build 238 (not 237) and has not improved with 239. As it stands right now at the main menu or in the ready room my GPU is at 98% usage.. (Texture and particle quality low, infestation minimal, and everything between anti-aliasing an texture streaming set to off. Multicore is on.) It was higher than average before, but it was never maxing out my video card to sit at the main menu before. While performance is better in the game compared to at the menu, it's still putting a bigger demand on the GPU, leading to lower average frame rates.

    Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24
    Radeon 5850 @ 775MHz with 1GIG GDDR5 @ 1125MHz (1680x1050, 32bpp)

Considering I play with settings turned down, I don't take too much of a hit in performance (FPS) with the new build, but I do notice the increased load on the GPU and my framerate is lower on average.

I saw a mild drop in performance with 238, not the same level as others have reported, but it was noticeable. 239 has seen a pretty dramatic improvement overall, probably to the highest level I've ever experienced. DxDiag output attached.

Performance dropped drastically in 238. 239 fixed it though.

A question if I may, is that DxDiag output ment to be generated in game? Or can I run DxDiag and set up a performance metre then play or something?
  • PeppermintNightmarePeppermintNightmare Join Date: 2013-02-02 Member: 182743Members
DxDiag is not a benchmark, it is a system information tool. start > dxdiag and you can save a report, this report contains detailed information about your system setup, this information is very useful for the devs.

Want to post my diag, but since I overclocked my CPU and DXDiag doesn't actually show that (its clocked 4.5 but says 3.4) I don't think it's entirely accurate to post, and could be misleading to the performance of the game (eg. runs better than it should at 3.4 cos its actually running at 4.5).
  • PeppermintNightmarePeppermintNightmare Join Date: 2013-02-02 Member: 182743Members
well, how about you post it AND tell them you're OC'd to 4.5...
  • Ghosthree3Ghosthree3 Join Date: 2010-02-13 Member: 70557Members, Reinforced - Supporter
True, I could do that, if I do I'll attach it to this post later.

Ok you can't edit in an attachment, cool, well here we go.

EDIT: Note, not sure if better than 236/237 yet, but definitely better than 238.

Posting nothing doesn't delete the post.

    Helps?

I noticed a drop in performance going from build 237 to build 238 and a slight improvement to build 239.

I do have a question about performance and how it works using a SLI setup and how the game uses the graphics cards. Running 2 680's at 1080p and in game i turn off Anti-Aliasing, Bloom, Atmopherics, Anisotropic Filtering, Ambient Occlusion, and Shadows. Vsync Disabled Texture and Particle Quality on Low, Infestation set to Minimal with both Texture Streaming and Multicore Rendering ON.

Both my GPU's run at 40-50% usage with no eye candy. With the eye candy turned on GPU's hit in the 90%+ range but the game isn't playable for me.

So my question is, How can i get higher GPU usage out of my SLI setup with the eye candy turned off and see the 200fps with dips of 130-150fps? Right now i'm seeing dips down to 40fps without the eye candy due to the low GPU usage.

Is it a driver issue or a game engine performance issue? Just wanted you guys aware of what i'm seeing and hopefully it's fixed at some point.

Steve, one of the known issues with this game atm is that it's bottlenecking the actual CPU and not fully utilizing the GPU's. It's something they're constantly working on and it's slowly getting better. Bear in mind this game was built on a from-scratch in-house engine designed by a team of 7 or 8 guys. Give em time, they'll figure it out ;)

Build 237 was ok for me. I had a big performance issue with build 238. For example, early game average dropped from about 60-70 fps in previous builds to 45-50 fps. Build 239 fixed it.

Thanx peppermint, I had that part sussed I was wondering if there was some output from the game linking to the Dx reporter, but now I see Steve just wanted raw system specs.

You and I have very similar systems. I don't know how your're seeing 40 fps with everything off. What resolution are you running? I am using 2560x1440 and with almost everything set to max I am running around 60 - 70 early game and 50's late. Using the same drivers you are too.

If you both have the same system it could be interesting if both of you create a plog (p_logall command, a file will be created in the %appdata% ns2 directory). Of course you have to do it for the same situation. If there is a already a difference in the readyroom, do it there, otherwise join a team and make a plog around the starting area. To end the plog exit the game.

DxDiag attached, i tend to find that my game runs better with the graphics set higher with AA off than what it does when i tried lowering the graphics which resulted in micro stutters oddly enough. The FPS is not real issue for me however having the graphics set higher takes MUCH longer to load into a server and typically i get there just in the nick of time to start the match while other players are already in there.

On a side note there are a few things in this build that is a bit of a pain like:

    1) pressing escape results in a freeze for a second or two before it loads the menu and when disconnecting it again freezes but on a black screen for a longer time (2-4 seconds-ish) before loading the main menu.

    2) the shotgun, a few times early game vs a skulk (no evolutions) shooting it at less than 5m rage took upto 3 direct hits to the face and lived long enough to bite chunks out of me. for this reason i pretty much stopped using the shotgun as it proved pretty useless for the res spent. im not the only one to have experienced this, just to note that it seems to be more effective a medium-long range than close for some odd reason.

I have actually found similar results, that the game seems to run more fluid in certain situations with higher graphics settings.
